How would you view a loss to PSU??

I'd be pretty ticked off, considering PSU is a good success indicator. They haven't beaten a team better than them and have only beaten teams worse than them. If they beat us, we aren't better than 5th in the Big 10, if that makes sense.

It would show that the Vols are not as far along as some on this board might think.

The same way I'll view it if we win, meaningless.
unfortunately i agree...but winning is better than losing always, even if meaningless.

i think i know what you mean....and to a point, we haven't beaten a team all year that was better than us either.

the question is...is the 4th place team in the SEC better than the 5th place team in the Big 10....? and the answer is........who cares????? besides us and PSU fans that is.

losing would suck is the short answer.

It only becomes an issue if UT is blown out. Otherwise I agree. I often wonder how a senior at UT motivates himself for the Outback or the Peach Bowl.

Given the results of the last two Peach Bowls, the answer is that they don't.

exactly. Let me make it clear that I do not a want loss by any stretch of the imagination, but I would hope a loss would keep Phil's seat warm enough that next year has to show lots of continued improvement

That could be why we seem to tank in those games!

So what I am reading is we go from high expectations, to no expectations?

Any bowl game should at least mean your playing for pride, so to me it means something. I was very mad last year when we were not in a bowl game at all. So were not in the BCS but this game still means alot in recruiting and pride.

I am really surprised by the number of posts who say a loss in this bowl game to Penn State would be meaningless!!!!!!!!

So a loss (potentially) to a lessor team in a decent bowl game is meaningless????? what about recruiting??? what about pride???? what about playing to win????

I am afraid that a number of former Vol players have had that attitude which resulted in some bad bowl losses. To me that kind of attitude can be counterproductive to team chemistry and growth.

If the Vols lose that will indicate to me that there are still problems over on the hill. You play to win and there is nothing fun about losing (even when you play your best).

i think we are taking it in the context of does it matter to the actual season, win or lose. and it doesn't. all the other things...recruiting, exposure etc...yeah, it's important. and winning is always better than losing, and i want them to win, and will be rooting like hell for them to do just that.

but if/when they do...am i going to go around thumping my chest screaming we're the outback bowl champs and buy the t shirt and hat? uh, no. that's where this is more directed to....we all know there is more at stake out side the game and this season itself, but as it relates to this season, this year, it really doesn't mean anything, win or lose.

A loss to PSU would make Fulmer's post season Bowl record fall to 2-5 over the last 5 years. He's not done a good job preparing teams for the post season games during that stretch.

and i mean all that from a fan's perspective, not from someone inside the program. for the players/coaches, this should be treated as an important game for all the reasons you stated above.

but for a fan, is there really a huge difference in finishing 12th if we win or 22nd if we lose in the polls? it just won't make that much difference to the perceived success, or lack thereof, for the 2006 season.

and at the end of the day...i still hate losing and i want to win this game, period.

Of course, a loss to PSU would represent a clear and unavoidable statement to Mike Hamilton that top-down changes must be made on the Hill immediately in order to preserve the honor and dignity of UT's football tradition.

P.S. I think Shula would be an upgrade for the Vols, especially of Cut bails out. Can you imagine beating Bama with the guy they fired? Priceless!
