Didn't get the game on PPV and had my father-in-law (arkansas fan) in town and over for the ark/ky game... So I got a real good look at both teams..

How did Tennessee look on defense against ark state? (I really don't have time to wade through the game thread looking for answers..)

Kentucky actually has a pretty decent looking team.
They can pass fairly well, but they've also got some hella good runners (at least against an arkansas defense).. Their first two RBs were doing fairly well and then both went out with an injury.. the third string (true freshman) came in and looked really good. We'll have our hands full with KY at the end of the season, I think.

Arkansas -- well, what can you say? McFadden and Jones are fabulous runners. Their offense line is effective, but more than anything, both these RBs are just plain good.
McFadden had 120+ yds before the end of the first half!
That said, Arkansas has NO passing game... the QB can throw the ball, but his accuracy is crap... and he sure didn't get a lot of help from his receivers either. If I were the OC at Arkansas, I'd pound the rock 6 out of 7 plays... or 7 out of 8. I think their running game IS that good and reliable.

also caught the tail end of the Bama/UGA game...
Really, I don't know what to make of either of those teams (still!).. I hate to see Bama come back late in the 4th quarter for the second week in a row. UGA, to their credit, hung in there.

Bottom line, unless things have really improved for Tennessee on defense, I'm not sure we can beat three of the four teams mentioned above.

so...

How did our defense look against Ark state?

ESPN was really crappy with flashing the UT score on their ticker, so that really drove me a little nuts...

I think we were up 31-17 at halftime? ...

Was the 1st team defense awful? or just the 2nd team? (or did the 2nd team even get in?)...
Or... just overall, doesn't matter... defense was awful?

Are we still not tackling?

There were no bright spots. Berry wasn't impressive. Hefney was horrible. Absolutely horrible. He was also terrible as a punt returner. Brent Vinson is no better than any of our other CBs. He was a master of playing 10 yards off the receiver, allowing a catch in the flat, and then missing the tackle. Ben Martin played a little at the end.

Also, JT Mapu recovered a fumble about 20 yards away from the line of scrimmage. I can only assume he was pushed there by an offensive lineman.

UT had a small amount of pressure on Arky State's QB, resulting in 2 picks.

Hefney dropped a pick and lost about 15 yards on a punt return

:eek:lol:

Defense was still terrible. The secondary tightened up in the 2nd half, but Arkie State ran the ball like a hot knife through butter. I don't know where our linebackers were.

I don't like him returning punts because
a) he is a starter w/ little to no depth behind him
b) there are plenty of younger, faster guys to put back there to give a chance

yahoo's article on the game says the defense gave up 377 yards (i'm not impressed), which coincidentally happened to be the lowest yardage total for ark state so far this year...

so.. i was having mixed feelings about it after reading the article..

i need to go back and look at the time of possession because based on what you guys are saying, it sounds as if the offense just managed to score points and kept state off the field quite a bit... just a guess...

i'm feeling sick to my stomach again ....

thanks for the quick responses...
