How Unique Is Our O-Line Situation?

So, what they are saying, and this is based on stats, that UT should be back next year strictly based on statistical starts. Excellent!

I knew it was bad, but that is crazy bad stats. He is saying that no team in several years, if ever, has had that few starts on the line. Couple that with the fact that some are playing out of position, no wonder we have issues. You would have issues with stud lineman across the board if they had that few starts. Gbo., get better in a hurry.

Honestly I don't even think this is just Dooley but that our fresh blood is full of misses. CBJs fault? Partially, but honestly you can't blame CBJ for players that can't play well right now.

This OL is inexperienced, and lack talent...but we had 4 NFL OL last year and were still offensively awful.

Bad in the skill positions. What we need is a good O-line and great skill positions.

But let's be honest, we're Tennessee. If we had that our defense would be awful. It's the Tennessee curse.

Blame the current coaches for lack of experience. We were blown out in several games last year but they did not put the back ups in to give them playing time (experience)

I was buying the experience excuse until we gave up five sacks to UTC several games into the season. We should be seeing some progress by now.

Interesting breakdown of our situation I caught on SS this morning.

10 19 13 segment 4 - YouTube

This is from today not sure why it say's 13'
On October 12, I made this observation:
My Crazy Way At Looking At Our Offensive Line My crazy way at looking at our offensive line:#1. Years of Experience Combined; This year we have
No Seniors (0 total games played at UT) (0% experience)
2 Red Shirt Seniors (6 total games played at UT) (0.20% experience)
1 Junior (no games played at UT) ((.003% experience)
3 Red Shirt Juniors (68 games played at UT) (3.40% experience)
1 Sophomore (15 games played at UT) (1.50% experience)
4 Freshmen (9 games played at UT)
3 Red Shirt Freshmen (5 games played at UT) (2.2% experience)
As you can see, the amount of games played and the amount of experience is not very much. On a look at the Star rating for these players. Stars range from a high of 3.7 stars for a player who is a Red shirt freshman to some who are walkons and in my examination could find no star for them. The sad fact that adding up all the stars and dividing by the number of listed linemen, we come up with a dismal 2.007 average.

What does all this mess mean...I guess we are not very good. Not much to work with here and in all seriousness, I don't think you should expect too much from this group of athletes. Afterall, they are trying, the fact of the matter is, they just don't have a whole lot to work with. Just My Opinion, thanks for looking.

Blair should start at RT, move Coleman to center and try Pair at LT. Starting the same guys over and over and expecting to get different results is insanity.

All this information was a known fact before the season started. I don't understand why VN is so surprised at the level of play of our O line. CBJ himself told us we were "young and inexperienced". He also told us "It's a process", and would take time, and recruiting before it gets better.

Yes Virginia, it has been that bad from the start. It will continue to be this year. Hate to burst a bubble but it will take two more years before it gets to SEC division title better. Sorry for the bad news but...

GO VOLS!

I hate hearing that our OL is "young." We're starting 3 upperclassmen and 2 true freshmen. Before Gilliam's injury, it was 4 upperclassmen and 1 true freshman. Yet, we were still a "young" OL. We're inexperienced and showing no signs of improvement. That's the scary part.

The improvement is minor but there has been an improvement in OL play since the beginning of the season. It is now apparent the weakest spot is RT. This is the position defenses are attacking in passing situations with the most regularity. Against Ole Miss the coaches gave the RT some assistance with a blocking back to his right on a few plays.

This in no way implies that all is right with the OL or will be in the remaining games of the season, just that there can be improvement. Given another year of development there should be a marked difference in the technical play of the Tackles. Freshmen are just not mature enough physically and mentally for the tackle position as there is a lot going on they need to deal with to be effective at that position.

Alabama will be another disaster for the offense but after that game the field gets a lot more level.

If you would take time to watch the video, you would know why unless facts don't matter to you.

Because:
1. They don't care about the facts.
2. They don't like the coaching staff.
3. They are ignorant of football in general.
4. They are frustrated and want to vent.
5. They are trolls.

Take your pick and add to the list as you wish.

I have tried many times to not so much defend the OL performance as just to understand where we are and how do we move forward. I still believe the OL are improving, but Saturday's injuries will not help that. I still haven't heard how serious the injuries are, but we need those kids back playing and learning. It is so sad to read the nonsense being said about Thomas. The kid is a player and will be good one day. On any other team, he would be redshirting this year, getting a few snaps next year, and starting his junior year. Unfortunately, too many VN comments are based on post-game emotion, frustration, need to blame someone/ anyone, lack of knowledge, and need for instant gratification. Let's support these kids UNCONDITIONLY.

Jones made an interesting comment on Twitter. It was something like this: "Thomas is playing against some of the best DEs in the country. Most are freaks of nature." Think about what Jones said and remember he is an OT.
