How Tennessee’s staff is embracing data and metrics to prevent mistakes on the recruiting trail

What was Derek Barnett's PAI coming out of HS? I bet he was a 3.0. Great measurement for track guys, but how do you measure heart? or wanna-go-get-the-QB? or take-your-head-off? IDK, but I hope they use common sense on most of these guys.

Somehow I think a team with 3 former National Recruiter of the Year coaches (Pruitt, Martin, Neidermayer) can figure it out but neat to see what tools they use to help form their assessments. Clearly they are doing something right.

Years ago I worked for a company out of Detroit, and our National Sales Manager had zero skills in hiring good sales people. The solution was going to a company that provided psychological profiles to all future candidates. The firm then gave three of us the test and then compiled a preferred profile from all three. This is what all future/new hire's were compared to.

While the tests that CJP is employing make sense, what ever happened though to good 'ol gut level calls on prospects? I know, I know - by having tests done, it minimizes the risk of the coach/s being help liable.

Hope these metrics prove their worth.

You can bet that anyone entering the rating industry with a new product (a proprietary recipe: algorithms, data base, data collection, eye-of-newt, etc.) has tested their product on history.

Would their product have accurately identified (the potential of) Peyton Manning, Cam Sutton, Antonio Brown, or that qb in New England? I think every personnel rating service understands what they're best at, and which capabilities escape their radar.

Which is why moneyed programs like Tennessee will utilize multiple services.

IMHO.

... Easier to be a good coach when you've got the athletes, but good coaches can make something out of nothing. Last year was a grace period...and that's over now. Time to rock.

Don’t know that I would say that last year was all the grace period for CJP. I expect to see a better team on the field this year and a record to go bowling but I think he needs some more grace period time to recover from Butch’s kerrfluffle. We were a cluster kerrfluffle when CJP got here.
