There's no doubt in my mind it's just a matter of time.
How high will we go?

Bruce Pearl

Knoxville, TN (AHN) - The University of Tennessee has rewarded head basketball coach Bruce Pearl with a one-year contract extension that will keep him with the Volunteers through the 2013 season and boost his overall compensation to $1.3 million per year.

Tubby Smith (highest paid)

University of Minnesota

Total pay: $2,073,307

Even though Kentucky fans were often calling for Smith’s head, he compiled an impressive record there: a national championship, five SEC championships, an average of nearly 27 wins per season, and six Sweet 16 finishes. Smith reached 100 wins at Kentucky faster than any other head coach, except for the legendary Adolph Rupp.

Before moving to the University of Minnesota in 2007, Tubby Smith was getting $2,073,307 per season in addition to a pair of automobiles and a one-time bonus of $4 million, according to USA Today.

If a school like Minnesota can pay this kind of money, how many schools can easily double what Coach Pearl makes right now? A lot!

i'd say pay him w/e he wants. we'd be stupid if we let him get away. i think there would be death threats to hamilton, since a lot of ppl are upset about fulmer as well

let me go on record as saying that i would not be a participant in any death threat to any person. i'd be upset but not make a death threat

we should worry about that when Pearl's resume is anywhere close to Tubby's

I highly doubt Pearl will ever be lost over a monetary issue.

all we have to do is match w/e anyone else wants to pay him.

I personally do not think he will leave anytime soon, he has said countless times that he loves it here and would like to be here for a while. I trust the man.

There is no reason to wait for others to be in pursuit, not that Coach would entertain a bidding contest, it is time for Tennessee to enter the big time and pay this man what he is worth...and it is a lot. The place is packed, Vol fans are actually excited about and talking basketball, more great publicity for Tennessee than it could ever buy, a packed TBA for every game, today a number 4 ranking...it is an easy decision.

He will win the tournament games and the SEC and all that other naysayer stuff. The time is approaching very quickly to simply do what is right.

They better pay him whatever is needed. I do think the facility upgrades meant more to him than money.

I don't think he's going anywhere either... Hamilton will pay the man, it's a no-brainer. Plus, this is HIS program... he plays in the House that Pearl Built. He is THE Basketball program at UT... I know there has been some history with Ray Mears and Pearl has celebrated that fact. But, Pearl's name is synonymous with UT Basketball - as much as Summit's name is... That could all change of course with fickle fans. But, right now I bet he doesn't see greener pastures anywhere in college basketball.

Pearl has done amazing things at Tennessee and deserves the money, especially if he wins the SEC and advances several levels in the NCAA tourney, but Summit is a legend... Pearl isn't at that level yet.

i've seen some opinions that at UT,it may be a political problem to pay Pearl considerably more than Summit due to her unparalleled success.

If Hamilton cannot realize that having a successful men's basketball program means more to the University's athletic funding than having a successful women's basketball program, he is naive.

Politics aside, it's all about the Benjamins.

Everytime we hired a new mens coach I read/heard that CPS has some sort of agreement that she gets a raise to match or something of that nature. Is there anything like that in effect?

I think it would take an unusually high amount of money to get Pearl to leave, but I would not dismiss it not being offered sometime. Nor would I dismiss him not leaving if the price is too good to refuse. Hopefully we can and do offer what it would require to keep him.

In the long term, Pearl has the ability to make more money for the athletic department than even Fulmer can, unless Fulmer was to start taking UT to a BCS bowl every year. A successful men's basketball team can make enormous money, because the overhead is only a small fraction of what it is for football, and because the NCAA Tournament makes so much money.

In my estimation, it's justifiable to pay Pearl the same as what we pay Fulmer, even if that means we also have to pay Pat Summitt that much. (You don't have to justify anything where Pat Summitt is concerned, anyway. The seven banners are justification enough for whatever salary she gets.) Pearl has the ability to deliver NCAA Tournament bids every year, with a team good enough to do something once there. Anyone who could take a mess like Buzz had created and go 66-21 in his first 87 games is one of the best coaches in the country. Pay him accordingly.

Let me tell you, if Hammy gets cheap with Pearl after all of the appologizing and politics he played with Fulmer...

I am going to have to completely disagree with you on this one. I will use Florida as an example. Last year, when they won championships in both football and basketball, they reported the following:

Revenue:
Men's Basketball $9,064,053
Football 58,904,976

Operating Expenses:
Men's Basketball $1,730,464
Football 6,656192

A good men's basketball team will never profit as much as a good men's football team.
