Crazy talk. The buyout will likely never be smaller than it will be in December 2017. Coaches get extended or they get fired. He already went one year without an extension. That happens one more consecutive year at the most. Even then the buyout only drops by 1 or 2 million. Buyout size is not the factor made out to be by fans.

8-4, he stays unless not competitive against LSU, UF, UGA, and Bama in 4 losses. Then further evaluation is possible.

7-5 40-50% chance he stays. Will depend on how competitive team is.

6-6 or worse, he's gone

The recruiting class next year may play a role. Holly got another year partially due to the incoming class. If Butch has top 5-10 class lined up, that may make the difference at 7-5 in getting another year.

Here's a modest proposal for a set of responses that might better fit the breadth of opinions of this crowd:

-- Fire him no matter what, even if he wins it all, I just don't like him!
-- Anything less than a 15-0 national championship, and he gone.
-- SEC championship saves his job, anything less and let's cut bait.
-- He's gotta win the East. That's the floor for staying another year.
-- As long as he matches the last two seasons (8-4 regular season), he gets another year.
-- I won't like it, but as long as he's above 6-6, he won't be fired.
-- There is no way Butch gets fired in 2017, short of a scandal.

Something like that. If you want EVERYone to get engaged.

This. They also typically spread the buyout over a 5 year period, so after 2017, the buyout payments would be a relatively small expenditure in reference to football profits.

A better question OP, would be what sort of record gets CBJ an extension at this point?
