Actually, I was talking to volswitten. What eloist posted is the public perception...
Well, not really. Nebraska was playing for a NC, but UT was not. Unless you consider that if Michigan would have lost in the Rose Bowl and Nebraska lost to UT. But UT still would have needed to be voted in and you know we would have gotten the Coaches poll vote, but not AP. So no unanimous NC and we already knew we were not playing a for a NC because Michigan won earlier that day. That year also serves as the last straw for split championships as the voters had enough with the drama and the BCS was born. We can always take credit for win the first outright BCS NC. They can never take that away from us:lolabove:TN played in the "National Championship" in 97-98
against Nebraska
and
98-99 against FSU
National Championship game because Nebraska won and they got to physically hold the trophy, but Michigan was still voted the NC in the other poll. Two wrongs happened that season. Giving Michigan a share of the NC and giving that chump Woodson the Heisman:no:It was the #1 bowl game that year
it was the national championship game of that season
The Orange Bowl that year WAS the "National Title Game". It was part of the Bowl Championship Alliance that was the precursor of the BCS. Michigan played in the Rose Bowl against Washington State that year, because the Big 11 and Pac 10 were not a part of the Bowl Championship Alliance.
Michigan was given a share of the "National Title" by one poll...but the winner of the Orange Bowl (unfortunately, Nebraska) got the big crystal football. It was the National Title game.
