How is this hotel?

Hi everyone,

I am making my first trip to Knoxville for the UK game. I grew up in east TN but have never been to a game. The whole gang is going which includes a 7 and 10 year old. I don't know anything about K-town, rooms, traffic or parking. On the web I found a Holiday Inn Express (Knoxville East i-40) that says it is within walking distance of the stadium. When I am on the road I like the HI express. They are not fancy but clean and consistent. Is this really walking distance to the stadium, are there restaurants nearby, etc? I thought we would stay close so parking isn't an issue. Or if parking is no big deal should I stay outside of town?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

The only Holiday Inn within walking distance is the Holiday Inn Select on Henley Street.

I've always liked staying on the outskirts of town myself. You can usually find a nice clean place, at a lower rate.

It's usually quieter too.

In many cases I agree. Most Holiday Inns are older and tend to be showing their age, but the Express brand is generally geared toward business travel and is very consistent.

If you stay at Holiday Inn Express a lot, I'm guessing you are a Priority Club member. If you've got points to burn, stay at the Crowne Plaza. Parking is free and you can catch a trolley either from the hotel or from Market Square down to the stadium.

I used points to stay at the Holiday Inn Convention Center. It wasn't the nicest, but it was free and a 10 minute walk to the stadium.

There's a Holiday Inn Express on the strip but appears to be sold out. The one on Henley street has available rooms but you would be paying $179 according to their website (I know there are ways to get discounts). Henley Street is quite a walk to Neyland and you could stay at the Marriot (formerly Hyatt) for less than that. You could always stay somewhere outside of downtown, drive to the Coliseum parking garage and take a bus from there to the game.

The Convention Center is a nice walk to the stadium, they have shuttles, indoor pool, decent rooms,etc. I've stayed there many many times. The one at Papermill Drive is nothing special but it'll do. The one at Cedar Bluff is pretty nice and there's Celebration Station on the other side of the interstate. Go carts, video games, batting cages, etc. Kids love this place. Also some really good restaurants on the same road. Easy to move around at this exit.

If you want to stay close to the stadium spend the extra cheese and stay at the Hilton or the Hampton inn both are nice the Hilton is 4 star very nice.
Plus parking will be a non issue. Thats the biggest thing in knoxville is the parking.
I'm sure Knoxville will be pretty shall we say, tame this weekend.

Thanks, GA. I'm staying at the Crowne Plaza for the first time since it was a Radisson for the Bama game. I know it is farther from the stadium than the Hilton or Marriott, so I'm glad to hear about the trolley. I am lazy.

I think you will find that it is a great way to get to the game. You can either catch a trolley directly from the Crowne Plaza for $15 or walk about 5 minutes to the other side of Market Square and pick one up there for $5.

The walk down to the stadium from there is not bad at all, but I the walk back would definitely suck.

The problem, I have found, is usually getting back to the hotel. Knoxville is one of the worst places in the world to catch a cab. Is the trolley on a regular schedule, perhaps into the wee hours of the morning?

I know the Market Square return trolley starts running at the beginning of the 4th qtr. Not sure how late it runs but I'm sure you could call the Crowne Plaza and they could tell you.

They must have realized that because they are remodeling a lot of their rooms currently.There are still a few that need upgrades but it seems the more popular locations are upgrading.
