How far have we fallen

It doesn't matter why! What I said was 100% fact... but if you like a Gator coming here and trying to run us down when their last two hires have been flops - then go ahead and kiss his butt. :good!:

Similar to the Bammer in the 5-7 Bowling thread.
It’s become normal for the UF and Bama fans to walk around comfortably here.
I don’t want to live in a bubble, but I think it’s in bad taste to go to a rival board and go on about sensitive topics to the point of lecturing.

I brought this up in another thread, but this is actually nothing new and that's not meant to be disparaging

Doug Dickey's first head coaching gig was Tennessee. He was an assistant at Arkansas. Bill Battle was a first time head coach promoted from within. Johnny Majors was a national title winning coach who was called home. If he wasn't an alumnus, does he go to Tennessee? I don't know. Phil Fulmer was a first time head coach promoted from within. Lane Kiffin was a first time college coach who was fired from his 1st head coaching gig in the NFL. And there's Dooley and Jones.

That's 50 years worth of head coaches and I'm not sure any of them were a break the bank "home run hire" based on their resume before taking the job.

The exception might be Majors who was coming off a national title, but every other season up to that point in his coaching career, his teams lost 4 games or more.

So, this coaching search is no different than any other.

Thanks for summing up why we have won only 1 National Title in 66 years of football.

Since 1970, there has been exactly one college head football coach who won a National Championship but then immediately left that job for another college head coaching job. Who do you think that coach was and where did he go? And while you're thinking of the answer to that question, why don't you ponder what "home run hires" Galen Hall, Ron Zook, Will Muschamp and Jim McElwain were - ONLY DO IT ON A F***ING FLORIDA GATOR BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bro....

I didn't say one negative thing about Tennessee.

The thread was "How far have we fallen?" That's based on who might be hired as a head coach (we don't even know who that is).

My point was that Tennessee (even when they weren't down) didn't go hire a Jon Gruden. That's not knocking Tennessee in any way.

I have no idea who the heck Florida will end up with. Tennessee might land Gruden and Florida gets Charlie Strong. I don't know.

Quit being so damn sensitive. Read and take the time to comprehend what is being written.

Maybe my standards are a little different than some people? My expectation for a coach is to put us on top of the East, win some SEC Championships, and win a National Title or 3 or 4.

And Furthermore, I have written in the past that the "home run hire" is a figment of the imagination anyway.

Usually, there is no home run hire available. It doesn't happen.

A lot of successful coaches were a bunch of "who dats" when hired.

Bobby Bowden
Jimmy Johnson
Dennis Erickson
Phil Fulmer
Tom Osborne
Joe Paterno
Gene Stallings
Barry Switzer

etc, etc, etc

We can't even get a big time coach to commit to us. And there is talk about Ohio St DC Schiano (who was at Penn St) Are you serious. The crap he did or knew about is a whole lot worse than what Kiffin did. I am telling you if Kiffin was coach here we would win championships. The guy can coach. He would bring in good coaches and recruiters with him. I would give him a contract and put alot of clauses in it.

Winning championships is what USC brought Kiffin in to do. He failed miserably. 35-21 combined UT/USC record. Zero championships! The guy *cannot* coach like you believe he can. Based on his behavior and traits, he's likely a sociopath. Sociopaths always convince people of their greatness through their braggadocio. The sooner you understand that you have been deceived, the easier letting go this foolish notion of bringing back Kiffin will be for you.

Tennessee is simply not the job and program so many fans (me included) have thought it is for all this time. It’s historically a good solid program with great fans and facilities.....but great seasons, great championship level football is just seldom played here. 1989 to 2001 was a great stretch of Tennessee football...was the late 60s before then and we certainly haven’t done much anything since, with the last 9-10 years being collectively just awful.

We’re not getting a big name splash hire this time either, just not happening. Gotta hope that Campbell, Brohm or Norvell grows into the job and gives us a handful of good seasons.

Sadly, the O'l Grey Mare just ain't what she used to be, we must accept mediocrity and learn to love it:)

Glad to see you back. Someone asked after you in one of the Gruden threads. Someone said they thought you had passed away. There was much consternation at that possibility.

Glad they were incorrect.

Hiring Kiffin instead of Patterson or Brian Kelly was an epic screw-up.

I think back to that search and how many good options were on the table. Kelly? Maybe, but I think he wanted Notre Dame. Petersen might have also brought us higher. Patterson? I wish they would have been that smart. Years later, I try to imagine how well he would have taken care of our program. And we could have had him. Epic screw up? I don't think the english language has a sufficient word for just how epic that was.

B Kelly went to ND a year later. Perhaps he would have left us for ND after one season. Perhaps not. At the very least, the timing wouldn’t have been nearly as bad as Kiffin to USC.

Witch Doctor hurt some feelings with the teenagers on the basketball board over the Bring Bruce back petition(that wierd guy that post 100 times a day started the rumor). Witch Doctor made them wish i was dead lol
