If I were a 5 star recruit how would you sell UT to me? And dont say I can play immediately....I can go to Arkansas and do that.
With the current situation in Knoxville how do you sell a kid into that?

Just be like "This is Tennessee...And from a historical standpoint, we won't be down forever...Also, you can play early...And also, you can be one of the heroes that restores this program to glory."

I think if i'm Jeremy Pruitt i'm playing all my young guys at this point. I would basically show everyone where the problem was on the field. Play them all, rotate them. Then you'll see who the loafers are and who is giving effort and maybe making mistakes. Only way he's turning the narrative of this season around. Go with the youth movement now.. You pretty much have too or most of the fans are just going to tune out.

I definitely think he is going to have to show that it indeed is going in the right direction to attract the amount of talent that is needed to be competitive in the SEC......If I was in fact a 5 star and was being pursued by all the top schools it would be a tough sell.

Troy Fleming was asked this question on that Sunday night show he does with Swain and some other guys. Said it was incredibly difficult, and you have to use a sales pitch that doesn't resonate with everyone.

Say you're recruiting a guy who is also considering Alabama or some other elite program. You go and tell that kid that Alabama was good before he got there, will be good when he's there, and will be good once he's gone. Their success as a program won't have anything to do with him being there, and their failure won't have anything to do with him not going there. Be honest with him about the fact it is a football factory that churns out NFL players, but say that also means he can get lost in the shuffle rather easily, particularly if he struggles early. They'll just move on to somebody else. Tell them that at Alabama he'll be a number, and here he'll be a name. Don't sell just immediate playing time; sell the fact that he'll have a chance to be a vital reason this program gets turned around, and everyone will remember that long after he's gone.

It doesn't work on a lot of kids. But what else can you tell them? If they go to Alabama and crack the depth chart, they are virtually guaranteed to play in big games, win titles of some kind, and will get lots of NFL scout attention. They don't care that it is a football factory - that's the reason they're going there in the first place. They are going to get coaching that is the best of the best.

Needless to say, it's an uphill battle, but that pitch resonates with some kids, particularly ones who really want to "be somebody" at their school. A big fish in a small pond, if you will.

Admittedly, the "lost in the shuffle" pitch probably appeals to kids who don't like competition for their position, which as a coach I don't think is something you want. Saying you "won't get lost in the shuffle" is another way of saying "you won't really have to fight for your position," and let's face it, a lot of these highly-touted recruits like that.

Yep.. I mean Saban doesn't have to do it as much now. In the beginning they were paying these dudes. It's why i don't respect him.. Now that he's won titles, put a bunch of guys in the league, he's built a reputation. It's dirty though, just like everything Alabama.

my argument would be that All eyes will be on UT as we have been nothing short of a horrendous spectacle. When we get this program turned around a solid five star will stand out and get noticed. Their name would be attributed as one of the factors that brought the big orange back.

“Listen kid, if you come to Tennessee, stay focused, and grow, Tennessee will get better and may win games in a few years”

“Kid keep in mind it takes years to start winning” “however you will get to start, and by your senior year......bam Tennessee might win games”

This sums it up:

Pruitt's reputation for developing NFL caliber players is huge. It's why he's been able to get guys like Quavaris Crouch and Henry To'oto'o.

How many kids has he coached who were not already NFL bound? I think it's something of a misnomer to say he's a great developer of NFL players when he's dealt with pretty much only the cream of the crop up to now. I just think that parents and handlers would easily see through that angle and opposing staffs would easily discredit it. The staff is reported as telling high profile prospects to wait and see what we do on the field before making a decision. So far, our performance hasn't given them much reason to come here.

We should institute an old custom, prima noctae. First night. When any common girl on our lands are married, you Johnny Fivestar will have sexual rights to her on the first night of her union. That should fetch just the kind of athletes we need here in Big Orange Country, and improve the gene pool of our recruiting base as well.

Hey Pineyvol, you 5 star stud. Come to Tennessee. There will be a man I've never met and I do not know coming by in a few minutes with several thousands reasons why we are the right school for you. And there is more once you get on campus.

See ya this summer.

You'll play immediately. You will have the advantage of elite facilities and a discouraged but rabidly hungry fan base. You will get great academic support and a great education with a degree that opens virtually any door you want to walk through.

You'd have to be careful with wording but you could also mention that even at low ebb... UT is putting more guys in the NFL than teams that are winning more. IOW's, you will get the kind of coaching and exposure that gives you a shot PLUS the opportunity to build your resume for 3 or 4 years rather than sitting behind someone else.
