Bama lost a lot of players to the NFL draft but they're still the most talented team in the country no question. We was less from a touchdown away from upsetting Bama in Tuacaloosa last year. This is probably Butch's best chance to end the streak in front of 100,000 fans in Neyland Stadium. We have the roster but do we have the mentality to win? What are some ways we could beat Bama that we failed to do last year? Of course Medley missing three critical field goal attempts will be the popular answer but I felt like our corners gave up too many passes towards the end of the game. With Shoop's agressive game plan, I expect our defense to get more stops on 3rd & 4th downs. I think the most important thing to beating Bama is to keep their offense off the field. Defense wins big games and I felt like that's what cost us the game last year is not getting key stops.

Obvious answer is to score more points than them.

However, we have to stop the run and be sound against the pass. Derrick Henry ran it down our throats late in the game last year and we could not stop him. I believe our offense is more than capable of beating Bama. Home field is also a plus.

It is true we almost beat them last season; however, a big part of the reason we were in the game last year was that we were coming off an open date and Bama was playing their seventh game in a row.

"The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win"* To me this means the key to beating them is limiting our turnovers and controlling the lines of scrimmage.

That's quite a big can of worms you've dug up, OP. There are a lot of reasonable approaches one can take to this one, and I'll submit yours is reasonable, as well. Bama's going to get in some big plays...particularly if/when the game's on the line. They're just too talented and well coached to not pull off some late game heroics. I think the key...what our Vols couldn't quite pull off last year...is our throw game has to produce an equal-or-greater number of crucial big plays as well. Talent. Experience. Coaching. I think Shoop and DeBord are every bit as good as anybody's got. I believe equally that CBJ has been climbing the learning curve exponentially, Dobbs' passing competency will be equal to the tasks at hand this year and there's enough talent with depth to prevent getting gassed at the 4th quarter. Add the Neyland crowd and escape another injury debacle like last year's, then we've got a legitimate shot. AMIRIGHT?

I think pretty much what everyone else has said so far plus take advantage of any turnovers we get get,got to come away with points off of those. Win special teams(all aspects of it) and keep there offense off the field. Standard stuff basically.

I'm gonna agree with what Blain Bishop said on the 3HL this afternoon. I would rather lose to them in Knoxville and then beat them in Atlanta than vice versa.

I've been coming on this board for 4-5 years now to have some good football talk. Was formally TNTIDEFAN but for some reason it will not let me post anymore so I had to get a new member name. Anyway, this game should be a classic. We both should be 6-0 (if we can beat ole miss) coming in. Both in top 10 if not top 5. Your talent level is much better and adding a proven DC should make your D better. I think this game comes down to the basics...injuries, turnovers and maybe a fluke play. I think the only advantage we may have is that our back ups may have more playing time so our depth may be just a tad better, but other than that I see this as a pretty even game. But with all that being said an injury to a key player on either team early in the year could be the difference. This game scares me but I am so glad the 3rd Saturday of October will actually be on the 3rd Saturday but more importantly much more evenly matched. I'll be back before the game to talk some good football, but until we meet, Good luck and lets hope we are both 6-0!

If you beat them in Knoxville, who is to say they make it to Atlanta, and vice versa. I would take the win at home and let Atlanta work out for itself. Just saying

We're deep. Depth isn't an issue with this Vols squad. Should be a good one, post more.

They have a tough row to hoe to make it to Atlanta. They play at UT, Ark., LSU, and OleMiss.

Do exactly what they did last year except take down the QB when they get their hands on him. On Alabama's last scoring drive they were pinned deep and we had a chance to sack Coker on a 3rd or 4th down I think and he escaped out of it. Any loss that we are going to avenge from last year, the answer is going to come down to finishing the game and don't play for 3.5 quarters only to let the opponent off the hook. Our defense had played a great game up until that last scoring drive. And even then they still played pretty good, Ridley just made some ridiculous catches to keep their drive going.

Other than punts, Bama never ran a play from scrimmage on fourth down in last years game.

I believe that both Hurd and Kamara will have over 100 yards. Hurd rushing, Kamara all purpose. Our offense is too dynamic for them to slow us down. We may not score a lot of points, but I think our defense will be improved enough to stop them. They don't have Henry, who knows how good Scarborough is. Who knows how good their QB is. They will still be a great team, but our starting 22 is better this year.
