How do the Gen Admission seats work?

I understand the first come first serve bit in regards to seating choice within the section, but are there more tickets printed than what seats are available? I know a local gas station sells them and has them at all locations in addition to the box office. If so, will they turn people away, allow "standing room only" etc? And lastly, If that is the case how early would you suggest getting there to make certain my family and I get seats. This is the first time we have gone the GA route and expect Thursday to be a packed house. If these needs to be moved to the ticket forum, I apologize, and please relocate it.
