How did Chavis get the nickname "Chief"?

Can any of you Vols sports studs or gurus tell me how John Chavis, our DC, got the nickname "Chief"?

I honestly believe it is because of his Native American heritage. I went to high school with "little John" and I know he is part Native American.

I've actually read that more than once in a few KNS interviews. I believe he is actually of pretty strong Native American heritage; like 1/4 or 1/2.

His wikipedia entry says he is Native American. Like kcvols1, I have seen it written about as well.
