How bout Estrella

JP stepped in for Awaka today and really played well. Grabbed a handful of rebounds and drew some fouls. Gotta make FTs though. I like him a lot
Sucks to lose Awaka on this tournament, but giving Estrella and Phillips some more minutes against these types of teams can only play dividends down the road.

He gave us big minutes today. Kept some balls alive on glass. We heard he could shoot from perimeter. He and Aidoo very well may get an opportunity tomorrow to show us against Edey, if they try and draw him out of the paint.

I'm hoping the quick hands of our guards can strip the ball from the big man from Purdue a few times

I wanted to make a post and say the same thing. I thought he looked very good! He's going to be a 1st teamer here in a few years. He'll take over the starting 5 position once Aidoo graduates, or maybe decides to leave early if he keeps playing the way he did yesterday!

Gonna need some huge minutes from Estrella and or Cade Phillips today. Hope awaka can go!
I’m not sure the strategy actually isn’t opposite…what’s more likely, Phillips or Estrella can hold their own in the post against the Naismith front runner, or that JJJ can cause him some problems and tire him out much like FDU did against him?

This! I like the combo of Aidoo/JJJ guarding him all game, even if Awaka was healthy. A wildcard option, and one that I'd maybe like to see is giving Mashack a go at him for a few possessions

Serious idea: post JJJ (maybe rotate Mashack) against Edey and have Aidoo as the weakside block/help defender.

Purdue doesn't look like they have the shooters to go 4 out to clear lane for Edey. at least, I didn't see that against Gonzaga.

Purdue currently ranks 11th in the country shooting the 3 at 42% a game

Don’t hate it…need to push the tempo in this one as often as possible imo.

I also thought Estrella played well. I was surprised he didn’t get to play more after a pretty strong start.

Ah, gotcha. Gonzaga game was an outlier for them then. They shot 4-17 (23%) from 3.

That was mostly due to one half. I think I saw that they were 1-9 in the first half from 3. If true, that means in the 2nd half, they shot 3-8 (38%) which is much closer to their actual level of perimeter shooting.

Whats the word on Awaka? I know it was his ankle but havent seen anything about the severity or whether or not hes playing tonight.
When the trainer was manually diagnosing him on the sideline, Tobe reached down and touched his outside leg, several inches above the ankle. Obviously this is too much to read from a simple gesture, but where he was indicating with his finger would be the peroneal tendon. But that tendon more usually suffers tendonitis over time rather than sudden injury.

That's my two cents.

If you're smart, you'll ask for your change.

I was most impressed by Estrella's defense, how quickly he got into correct positions, like protecting against screens. For a freshman, he looked well-prepared mentally, and was reading and reacting well to what his defensive teammates were doing.

He did that against Syracuse with several days of preparation. I guess we'll see today what he does with only hours of preparation.
