Do you think we'll use press coverage and try to disrupt off the snap, cheating a safety over to that side in case the corner gets beat? Or do you think we'll play off the line? Man to man or bracket zone coverage?

I'm looking forward to seeing what we do. I like the idea of press coverage, particularly if he's on Berry's side since Berry has the size advantage plus speed the speed to keep up.

Call me crazy. But i think you will see berry covering jackson in this game.He matches up well physically with him.It makes me nervous knowing a freshman will be on him alot.We will cheat heffney to his side alot.Hope we don't give ole blue hair enough time to take advantage of it.

Someone posted an interview with Hef that said he told Berry to just go out and play and he (Hef) had his back.

Thats reassuring to me.

What a gift it would be if Berry starts against Cal. This would be best case scenario for the Bears. Bring on the Crunch Berry and pass me a spoon

I think we will see alot of cover 2 man and cover 3 zones this game. When in cover 2 man we need berry on him and a saftey (Hefney) cheating over to that side. BUT THE KEY TO IT ALL IS PRESSURING THE QB.

Defensive line penetration and disruption on Longshore or the lack of it will define this game.

I agree that QB pressure is key. Longshore's lack of mobility hurt him last year and he didn't throw well when on the move. I don't know if Bolden & Mapu will create enough of a push to flush him out of the pocket - or whether we'll blitz up the middle. If we bring pressure from the outside that might give Longshore a split second longer... in which case our DBs coverage will still have to be good. I'd like a combination of disruption up the middle and bump and run at the line.

This statement does nothing but reveal you ignorance about the team Cal will be playing Saturday. Berry is probably the most physically gifted DB we have (sorry Hef) and the only knock against him is inexperience.

Best case scenario for Cal is if our coaches are too stubborn to put a true freshman on Jackson and leave the equally inexperienced and less talented Johnson or Gaines on him.

With all due respect, if Berry is going one-on-one with Jackson he is going to get burned several times.

Press coverage does us no good because Johnson and Gaines are tiny. I'm curious to see what happens.

Inexperience is HUGE. At this level most of these guys are gifted athletes, Jackson is certainly gifted with experience. A true frosh playing his first game ever against what some people consider the best wr in the nation is BIG trouble.

It seems Berry has a chance to be great but going against one of the best in the nation in his first game is a tall order.

I totally agree with that but to say putting Berry on him is best case scenario for Cal is just ridiculous cause Johnson and Gaines are for all practicall purposes just as inexperienced. So with experience being all but equal...why not put the talent on him?

Same way we did last year, beat up Longshore until he doesn't want to throw anymore.

Nickle Package with a safety cheating to his side.
QB pressure, 4-3 with a blitzing LB if not in a nickle package.

It's like the lesser of two evils. Any of those guys covering him is bad for us. If I were a Cal fan I'd be excited too. Their best player going up against inexperienced db's.

Can you imagine what we would be saying if Meachem came back and was going against a true freshman?

One key difference is Meachem was much bigger and more physical than Jackson. DJax won't be able to push around our DBs, even our small corners.

I think we double up on DJAX and pray that our linebackers keep Longshore running for his life.

4-3 base defense drop the line backers into coverage. Our linebackers are quick. So just play the bend but dont break style, we should get pressure with our front 4. So when they dump it off we should have somebody in place to lay the smack down on em.

Jackson particularly scares me on the kickoff return with the new rule change.

Good point...let's just hope Jackson is no Meachem:crossfingers:...

He obviously doesn't have the size so he's not going to out jump or out muscle any of them. He may be .05 faster in the forty but that won't matter if Hef is helping on him...

The only way he consistently burns us...IMO...is if he is so quick that his routes are precise and he just keeps burning us for 5-15 yard gains. I just can't see him getting past us with the speed we have at both corner and safety...

The real danger from him will be on punt returns :eek:hmy:

you got to hit jackson at the line. back off him and he will destroy you. same for hawkins and jordan.

Marvin Harrison isn't big either.

I just looked at his game-by-game stats from last season. He had 4 100 yard games. They were against Minn., Portland St., Arizona and Stanford. Not very impressive. The Minn. game is the only game he had more than 1 td catch.

Yes, I think that will be the general gameplan. Press under with safety help. I also think you will see us mix up coverages some to confuse both he and Longshore, and, as Dan mentioned, throw a lot of different packages at Longshore. A confused quarterback throwing from his backside takes a lot of the gamble out of matching an inexperienced DB against a good receiver.
