There appears to be two strong candidates for the Kansas head coach vacancy, but another name is now thrown into the mix.
ESPN.com's Chris Low links us to a Kansas City Star report which says Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt is interested in the Kansas job, and that he's talked about it with Kansas AD Lew Perkins.
We ranked the candidates to make this easy for you:
1. Turner Gill, Buffalo: Kansas AD Lew Perkins may have already met with Gill after Buffalo gave Kansas permission to talk to their coach. The meeting likely happened (or will happen) in New York, because Perkins is traveling to Manhattan for the National Football Foundation's annual awards luncheon, at which Jayhawks QB Todd Reesing is up for an award. But Gill might not have his hopes up yet. Last offseason, he interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Auburn and was considered the favorite by some. He was passed over for Gene Chizik, which drew the ire of none other than Charles Barkely.
2. Jim Harbaugh, Stanford: Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh was reportedly the top target early on. But he may be waiting for an NFL job, and he's also been interviewed for the Notre Dame job, which is likely more attractive than the KU opening.
3. Houston Nutt, Ole Miss: This name came out of the blue, but the Kansas City Star reports that Nutt is interested in the job and that he's met with Perkins. However, there's no word on whether Perkins is interested. As ESPN.com's Chris Low points out, Nutt's name has often been brought up when jobs open.
Other candidates: Southern Mississipi coach Larry Fedora, Boise State coach Chris Peterson, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables, Central Michigan's Butch Jones and UConn's Randy Edsall.
Also, Houston's Kevin Sumlin was in the running but that may soon change. Houston is looking to restructure and elongate his contract after a successful season, ESPN.com's Graham Watson tweets.
That said, the two favorite appear to be Harbaugh and Gill, with Gill more likely to make the jump to the land of Oz.
