Last week, about 100 college presidents
(including some from the most prestigious
universities) recommended that the U.S.
lower the drinking age to 18.

Back ground:

For the record, the drinking age was established
at 21 in 1933, after Prohibition was repealed. In
1971, when the voting age was lowered from 21
to 18, several states reduced the drinking age,
too.

In 1984, however, with the National Minimum
Drinking Age Act, all U.S. states were required
to return the drinking age to 21.

Reminds me of a funny story, a girl showed
the bartender her ID and he only glanced
at it, he saw I noticed and so said; "I'm
sure she's 21, this is her 4th 21st birthday
party."

And then one time my mother-in-law said
to my wife; "I was going through some of
your old things and found your drivers
license from when you were in college,
you know they had your birthday wrong."

"Well I never even noticed" replied Sweetiepie.

States were not required to change the age. They were threatened with reduced funding for highways if they didn't. Just learned this in my American Government class.

That is correct, sir. I don't recall if it was complete withdrawal of federal highway funds or just a reduction...I was thinking that it was complete withdrawal....

I think it was something like 10-15 percent actually. I'm in front of the tv with a laptop and a pint of the black stuff, textbook is on the computer table, we'll just have to wing it.

I'll vote with that, if you are old enough to vote or serve, even die for your country, you should be able to walk into an establishment and purchase an adult beverage like any other person who is "of age."
