I'm NOT doubting that the Vols could go 8-4 this season because it's certainly possible.

My point is clear that if UT doesn't achieve the lofty expectations placed on Butch by the media and a some fans that he shouldn't be fired for a season that neither Dooley or Kiffin NEVER achieved at UT.

Better than Dooley and Kiffin should not be where the bar is set for coaching at UT. We are paying the head coach over $4,000,000 a year, that buys you a heck of a lot more than Dooley quality coaching.

I think the pressure for CBJ this year is more with the 2017 recruits that with the fans. Sure, we will be super pissed if we can't turn a few corners but probably not enough to start burning our beds.

But CBJ will have a much harder sales job in continuing to get top shelf recruits into the program if he can't pull us out of mediocrity this year. Especially with all of the talent we have not only in players but also coaching staff.

I'm thinking it's a moot point though. We gonna rock!!! GO VOLS!!!

I wouldn't call 9-4 mediocrity, right Fulmer?

Depends what we refer to by pressure.

In terms of losing their job, Sumlin is at the top of the list because of the QB transfers and other mess (how the mighty have fallen).

In terms of faith in a coach and where they will take the program......and you all can deny it all you want......if on 9/24 Tennessee loses to Florida......again.....mattresses will burn. People will declare Butch a great guy, but not the man to take Tennessee where they eventually want to go.

Now, I can already see the replies "what if we go 11-1" yada, yada, yada. If Tennessee loses to Florida, they aren't going 11-1.

But, I am convinced that if Tennessee does not win the East this year, this fan base will lose all faith in his ability to get it done. They will credit him for bringing the program back to respectability, increasing the level of talent, making Tennessee relevant again, etc. But, they will also conclude that if they want a championship, they are going to need another guy.

JMO.

So, yeah, Butch is under a different kind of pressure. But, he ain't losing his job. He's not losing his job with a 7-5 season.

Baloney!

Fulmer coached in an era when the regular season was only 11 games. In 2006 a 12th game was added. This game is always a weak G5 or FCS home game. To compare Fulmer's records in the 90's to Butch's you either add a win to Fulmer's year or take one off of Butch's.

Any of those other 3 guys would survive 8-4. I don't think Butch would survive 8-4.

I respectfully disagree. Butch would have to woefully underachieve with this roster. And by woefully I mean 4-8 or worse. 5-7 wouldn't do him any good either.

Yep... That would make zero sense. The natives would begin to get restless, but no way he'd be in any danger.

Exactly. This.

Not to mention his contract was just extended through 2020, I believe.

Don't know what you mean there....

It's not pressure for Butch as in lose your job....
It's just PUT UP OR SHUT UP time......It's more about coaching respect.....OK and Fla showed last year that we had the athletic talent to win those games going away...and it was COACHING decisions, plain and simple, that cost us being 10-2 last year!

So--PUT UP or SHUT UP....has this STAFF collectively matured beyond the "choking" age....

Everything so far says they have to me....last 2 years getting rid of sub-par Coordinators....Debord finding his groove again as the season progressed....

And now a proven Pit Bull in Shoop with improved talent across the board....

but no matter what anyone says--that FLA game is HUGE concerning this staff's cred and team confidence.....and the Gators ain't gonna lay down!

Just to tie a bow on all this it's ok to be a casual fan and not REALLY understand how all this fits together but don't make an absolute idiotic statement about CBJ not "surviving" an 8-4 season and not expect to get verbally reprimanded. It's simply childish to think like that. What a waste of good time...,sigh!!!

I think there is plenty of pressure on both him and this team, but at the same time with the talent we have and the fact weplay in the east, I think what most are expecting is not asking a lot.

10-2 and an appearance in ATL is reasonable and is the lowest acceptable expectation. Even then, I am thinking 9-3 could be enough to win the division this year if Georgia hits some stumbling blocks.

Miles may get the ax this year---alabama will dominate the SEC west and les may lose 2-3 games---they've had enough of his act down on the bayou.

If they do, then they deserve another Gerry DiNardo to replace him.
