Think I see why he was done with Yellowstone and TV in general…this could be his opus, which is saying quite a lot. 😳

The 3 people on the Big Picture reviewed this movie, no spoilers. I think I should share some stuff because if you have the right expectations you will enjoy the movie more:

- The two male critics liked it and the girl didn't dislike it, but they all had mixed feelings.
- There are a few really great scenes.
- It's not a normal story and that will throw you off. It's more like 4 stories that presumably come together more in the 2nd part. At the end of the 1st part (which is a long 3 hours), all 3 critics were confused that it was even over.
- Because of the way they handle the story, it feels more like a 4-episode TV show (which is how it may be packaged for streaming).
- Because they shot on digital and not film, it feels more like a TV show.
- Kevin Costner doesn't appear in the 1st hour of the movie.

The digital feel and story pacing are things that would have thrown me way off and I might've hated the movie, but knowing all that, and expecting it, it won't take me out of it. I know some people would definitely be like WTF is Costner?!!

I watched it this morning and I agree with a lot of the points you posted. It reminded me of Costner's 'Hatfields and McCoys', as in, it felt and looked like a TV miniseries. (I went to the bathroom about an hour into it and told the usher I thought it looked a little out of focus.🤦)

It was ok, but after seeing the 1st part, I'm not really excited for part 2. I just don't care what happens to the characters *spoiler the 2 characters I did like, died within the 1st hour. Costner's character has the potential to be rememberable. . The story lines didn't draw me in, even though they spent plenty of time building the characters/stories. A few of the actors feel miscast and some characters are just unlikable.

*I really enjoyed Costner's 'Hatfields and McCoys' and had high hopes for 'Horizon'. I knew going in I was watching part 1 of 4 and I'd be dealing with multiple story lines. I wasn't expecting an action movie so I wasn't disappointed there. I thought the story would be more interesting and give me something to look forward to.

I don't know how true this is but I had read Costner originally was originally targeted to be in Tombstone as Wyatt Earp but he didn't like that the movie was more an ensemble type movie and wasn't titled to single out Earp. So he instead used his influence to get Wyatt Earp made into a major movie, when it was originally going to be a TV mini-series. So if true he basically passed because of vanity and made another Earp movie out of spite and it backfired.
👀 I found this quote in the 'Weird Facts About Famous Movies' thread. As soon as I read it, I thought "that sounds familiar". Costner has done the same thing with Horizon. He's the only real star and he cast a bunch of b-level/unheard of actors. It makes Horizon feel like a tv miniseries. Vanity seems to be his greatest weakness and it's hurt what could have been an epic "western" film..... well, at least part 1 of 4.

Crummy movie. Had some interesting parts, but boring.
Seldom agree with Rotten Maters but their 46 is about right.
I guess you'll have to watch all four parts to be able to put everything together.

More money for Kev.

I think he put up a ton $ and a good chance he doesn't earn it back.

One of the things a critic said was he ditched his Taylor Sheridan show so he could make an epic movie but it's really just a Sheridan show
