Chris Lofton freely admits he wasn't at his best for three pivotal days earlier this month.
But he still expected to be on the team that represented the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games. Turns out, he was wrong.
"I thought I was going to make it," Lofton said, "but things don't happen for a reason. It just made me work harder."
Villanova coach Jay Wright's squad of Americans didn't reach the medal round. They shot 29 percent from 3-point range without noted sniper Lofton, losing to Uruguay and Panama and finishing fifth out of eight nations.
"You always hear, 'We don't have enough shooters,' and then we might leave the best shooter in the country here," Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said. "Well, he didn't shoot it well that weekend, but if you went in with the pre-conceived notion that he's one of the best shooters in the country, you take him.
"I don't make decisions about who plays based on what I see on a weekend."
On the approaching Euro trip...
After a few allowed early practices at home, Tennessee will play five exhibition games against varying European club teams while also visiting Bratislava, Slovakia and Vienna, Austria.
"I've always followed up these tours with good seasons, because there is some advantage to getting this training and getting this chemistry," Pearl said. "I don't think there's any question it will help us, particularly earlier in the season."
Schools are allowed summer trips like this every four years.
arriving transfers J.P. Prince and Tyler Smith and true freshmen Cameron Tatum and Brian Williams -- are not eligible to go.
On Pearl's list is the use of Lofton at point guard, Duke Crews at small forward and the initial implementation of a zone defense on a team that has primarily used man-to-man.
"We're going to play every game to win, but I'm not worried about what our record is over there," Pearl said. "I'm going to play a lot of guys. I'm going to try a lot of different things."

Chris Lofton isn't a big fan of McDonald's. But if that's the only All-American food the All-American basketball player can find in Europe next week, he's all over it.
Tennessee teammate Duke Crews pondered packing a bunch of lunches.
As for UT men's basketball Coach Bruce Pearl, he said, "I'm not traveling over there for the food, let's put it that way."
