Just 9-5, maybe even 8-6, between now and the SEC tourney puts the Vols in the dance. I like those odds...

Bits and pieces from Pearl's world....

Gentry Estes' Beat Notes
Howell on Saturday.... maybe even Wednesday
Jordan Howell returned to practice Monday wearing a soft cast on his right hand.
He participated in every drill except live scrimmages.

"I did everything I expected to do," Howell said. "Obviously, I would have liked to have played, but I don’t know if I was ready to jump into it. Today was the first day I’ve caught a ball in a month, I guess."

"It’s sore, but I think I can play with it," Howell said. "I definitely notice it when I’m flicking my wrist and everything. But I think it’s just something I’ve just got to deal with and get over it."

UT coach Bruce Pearl said he realistically expects Howell back for Saturday’s home game against South Carolina. But Howell hasn’t ruled out a return Wednesday night at Auburn, a school with family ties for him.

Jajuan on the state of his Game
JaJuan Smith’s answer for his current slump? Keep firing.

"I’m just going to keep shooting," Smith said, "and I hope they start falling."

The former McMinn County High standout was 3-of-16 from 3-point range in the two defeats. His two-game total of 11 points was fewer than he had tallied in any game the previous month.

"He is streaky," Pearl said. "I’d like to see him make some better decisions on some deep 3-balls that he takes. I thought he had a couple of bad shots at Ohio (State), a couple of shots where even if they went in they weren’t good looks. He’s got to try to work harder without the basketball to try to get better looks."

Suicide watch by Pearl's assistant coaches
Pearl took no comfort from the fact Tennessee stayed in the Top 25 at No. 22 despite two straight losses. That’s why assistant coaches showed up at his door late Sunday night to help scan tape of Auburn.

"They were kind of like on suicide watch — for me," Pearl said. "I didn’t ask them to come over, but I appreciated them coming over, because nobody likes losing. There’s no doubt we’ll be ready to go."

History backs that claim. In Pearl’s 15 years as a head coach, he has never lost three consecutive games.

"Sure we bounce back," Pearl said, "because we’re competitors and losing hurts."

Free Throw Sprints
The Vols ended Monday’s practice taking turns at the foul line. A miss meant sprints for the entire team, and all players were winded by the end.

In the past two losses, Tennessee made 42.3 percent (11-of-26 ) of its free throws.

"It’s not like we’re not working on it," guard Ramar Smith said.

Pearl accepted blame for UT not being in the double bonus. The Vols shot 31 times from 3-point range Saturday, avoiding 7-foot center Greg Oden.

"We’ve got to go inside more," Pearl said. "We’ve got to mix our inside offense with our outside offense."

JP Prince?
Tennessee’s coaches have until the end of the week to decide on potential point guard transfer J.P. Prince. The Vols are still evaluating whether to accept the Memphis native who left Arizona’s program last month.

Prince visited UT on Thursday and isn’t commenting on his future plans

Go Vols!!!

It seems the word on Prince is that he will be a vol. I posted the link in the recruiting forum.

I'm glad they're working on FT's but hate to hear they had to run so much.

Good stuff, indeed, and much appreciated. If nothing else, those wind sprints will get them in even better shape.
