Honeymoon Spots

Think about Costa Rica. Beautiful and exciting. Canopy tours nice beaches. I would have liked to go there but we were going someplace close and easy-we took the Bahamas route and stayed at Sandals. It was nice and the food was good there. We had a good time but if you head there, everything outside of the resort is very expensive to do. I wanted to take a speed boat out to an island and feed iguanas hike and swim-300 dollars each-no thanks. Jet skis, 60 bucks each for 30 min-scuba i didn't check into. There are a ton of things to do in an all inclusive but make sure from others that it is all inclusive. My ideal would be travel to wherever it is ski season and spend a week in a place like Chile, New Zealand, or Austria. If not for the coup, Fiji sounds nice but it takes like 2 days to get there.

My wife and I went to Maui, too. Absolutely beautiful!! We snorkled, took a helicopter trip around Io and some huge waterfalls on some other islands, did the trip to Hana, and biked 38 miles down Haleakala. The pools there are the best. The beach was nice, but a little (ok, alot) too rough. Saw some huge waves at a place called "Jaws", and saw Willie Nelson's bar in a hippy town called Paia. Much more to talk about, not enough space to write about it.

In a couple of years, you'll be able to take your wife and my family to Chile, New Zealand, Austria, and Fiji. :)

Just think about this. We went to the small island of Antigua for our honeymoon. The fact that is a small island in the carribean is great, but you leave the resort and it is a "Third World Country" we wanted something to remember and not be "cookie cutter" we got it but also paid a pretty penny to do so.

My advice: pony up and go to Hawaii. It is every bit as beautiful as you imagine and you still get the benefits of it being a state of the U.S. My wife and I were married in Maui, a bit of a "best of both worlds" island. Oahu I'd avoid, Kauai is supposed to be the least adulterated, and the Big Island has the volcano and a lot of history. Ideally, I'd like to visit both of the latter two on a 7-10 day trip sometime.

Anyone who has visited Mexico or the Caribbean can attest that even the swankiest of resort spots are surrounded by nothing short of third-world country. Leave resorts in Jamaica at your own risk. There's nothing wrong with Sandals/Beaches/etc. if that's what you're looking for, but there is definitely a lot of advertising frenzy that is meant to sell you on the "ideal" honeymoon. My experience is that you can spend a similar amount and find your own (better) places to eat and stay, and have a little less of an artificial feel.

Somebody mentioned Alaska, and from what I've seen, that would be a great place to go, too. My brother loved his last visit.

The frau and I did the all-inclusive-resort-in-Jamaica honeymoon a bunch of years ago, just like most every 22-year-olds, and it was fine. (And that's all it was: fine.) The most interesting part of the trip, though, and the one which we still talk about the most, was when we walked outside of the gates to "town" to find a "grocery store" because I was looking for a particular Jamaican beer (Dragon Stout, if anybody knows it). It was pretty instructive to see what sort of squalor spreads out around around the resorts; it became pretty obvious why all of the resort's employees spent the whole time trying to get me to buy pot. ("Hey, rude boy! You a ragamuffin, a man of the streets, right? ! You want smoke, eh?")

It was fine, but if I were older and ergo had any actual money, I'd go somewhere else. Italy, probably. If you're lucky enough that your woman is a drinker, go to Ireland. My wife loves both!

Just now getting started and I am already behind the 8 ball everyday. They treat you like crap and beat you down from day one and then at the end, offer you a job.

I didn't realize they had Fraternities in graduate school.

Yeah, but your big brothers are MDs that hate you because you are you and CRNAs that want to bust your balls cause they had it done to them. And I pay for this privilege.

I know a handful of people who are very gifted in the scientific realm, but avoid the medical profession because of the hazing involved with residency and internships.

Keep myself best unseen, that is the plan. A lot of yes ma'am and yes sirs for me and I dont know anything or have any opinion what-so-ever. Sucks, but I gotta do it.

Were you skiing Papa? Having grown up on the east coast, all of my vacations these days are ski vacations. The Mrs. and I did 7 days at Tahoe for our honeymoon.

Poor baby.

Just kidding. Sorry school is whipping you, but stick it out -- time flies when you are getting beat up. I still can't believe I endured 7 years of med school and residency. Of course, Peds training is not nearly as harsh as surgery, etc., but we had plenty of unpleasantries to enjoy. For the record: I never cried. (In public).

Jake -Where did you stay at in Marigot Bay? Would love to spend a week down there at an affordable place, but am cautious to venture outside the sandals/beaches type resorts.

I personally did the already discussed Sandals honeymoon in Jamaica. Loved every bit it, but 5 years later, still cringe at the thought of a red stipe draft beer.

I would recommed an all inclusive type package that will allow you to unwind from what will most likely be a few stressful months leading up to the wedding. Not having to worry about finding places to eat, drink, your personal safety, and your budget was well worth it to me. Have been to Hawaii twice and enjoyed it, but not sure that 12 hours on a plane (depending on where you fly from) is the way I want to spend the first and last day of a honeymoon.

Save the adventurous trips for later on after the "newness" wares off.
