There is an article (Roundtable: Who has surprised?) linked to the home page of Rivals.com, which suggests that Tennessee may be the " biggest surprise of the 2014 cycle." Can anyone who has a subscription to Rivals.com provide a synopsis of the article?

It's been posted in a few threads already. Not being an ass, I'm just too lazy to find it for you. Basically it said our class was good, nothing too noteworthy besides that.

7 national analysts weighed in and 4 chose UT, 3 chose UK. Here are what the analysts said about UT...

Rob Cassidy, West: Tennessee is only surprising because of the season it had. It's hard for an SEC team with national titles to its name to shock, but a No. 4 recruiting ranking paired with a 5-7 record is impressive nonetheless. What Butch Jones and accompany have accomplished recruiting-wise since taking over the Vols' program is beyond outstanding when you consider the circumstances. Tennessee isn't exactly the little program that could, but it's current ranking is at least a bit of an upset.

Woody Wommack, Southeast: It's the obvious choice but with the way Butch Jones and Tennessee have recruiting this cycle coming off a sub-.500 year is really incredible. The Vols still have a chance to finish in the top five of the Rivals Team Rankings and have done an incredible job of building and maintaining a great class. Obviously when a school takes upwards of 30 players it's because they need an injection of talent and that's exactly what Jones and company have done with their first full recruiting cycle.

Adam Friedman, Mid-Atlantic: I think most people are impressed by what Butch Jones and his staff at Tennessee have done with their class this year. The Vols are the only team in the top five of the team rankings that had a losing season in 2013. Maybe more importantly, they locked down their home state, grabbing commitments from five of the top six players in Tennessee. Josh Malone, the best player in the Vols' 2013 class, looks like he will be a surefire difference maker when he steps on the field in Knoxville. Probably the most impressive thing coach Jones has done is create this buzz about Tennessee on the recruiting trail and it is continuing to build.

Jason Howell, Midlands: The Tennessee Volunteers are the team. What Butch Jones is doing on the recruiting front has to make Volunteer fans across the country smile. Tennessee already has five-stars Josh Malone and Jalen Hurd, the nation's No. 2 tight end, and two of the top 10 JUCO recruits on campus. The Volunteers have clamped down on the in-state talent with four of the top five committed, and have dipped into Georgia and Florida with success. Then there is the presence in the Midwest. Jones and the Volunteers currently sit No. 4 in the team rankings and No. 3 in the SEC. Not bad at all as Signing Day approaches.

The difference to me is that CBJ and company has maintain this class and continue to add other great recruits, something we haven't been able to maintain in the past.

It is impressive when you look at the w-L records of teams last year and recruiting rankings. Tennessee's 5-7 record is the one that doesn't fit.

:dance2:The trick is follow this class with another top 5 in 2015, then we will be on our way kicking azzes and taking names in the near future.

The seven or so commits for 2015 look very good. I think the trends has been set and we can look forward to outstanding classes in the future, next 10-15 years.

What do you mean by that?
I understood that to mean that our 5-7 record doesn't exactly jive with the rest of the teams in the top 5, or top 10, of the recruiting rankings.

1. Bama 11-2
2. OSU 12-2
3. Tx A&M 9-4
4. Tenn 5-7
5. FSU 14-0

One of these is not like the others.

True. But they all mentioned UT's record as a factor that had to be overcome. If the record does not improve then it is very unlikely UT gets the ear of top recruits next year or perhaps even holds on to the good ones already committed.

Fans don't really have "options". We can both afford to be patient and kind of have to... Recruits have options and will usually go to the coach who proves he can win.

I don't think they need a homerun... win the games you should and pull off a upset or two.... that gains respect. Showing improvement is good.

Ah you mean with this year's record. UT has a very solid class, should help in the rebuilding. Florida is still ranked #7 but they only won 4 games, but I do see your point.

Things work in cycles, maybe the cycle is coming full circle.

Don't overlook the importance of potential playing time to a recruit.

One of the most amazing things to me is that we have kids from 12 states. I heard that on the radio this morning and it really resonated. That "stat" is easy to come by I just hadn't spent the time counting them out. The national reach has been phenomenal.

Not being an arse...but how come Bama & the likes keep getting top recruits when their 3 deep at every position...talk about playing time.
