...Brady Hoke is tapping into his coaching roots as the defensive line coach for the Vols, and even with a shorthanded group this spring he's pushing his players to their limits in trying to help their development.

"He's been in my -- I can't say it," freshman defensive end Deandre Johnson said with a laugh after Thursday's practice. "Coach Hoke, he's a great coach. He coaches really well. He's helped me slow the game down mentally. He's worked with me on technique. That's the biggest thing, just coming in and working technique and just learning the scheme."

..."From day one, he put his foot down and he let us know he's going to be the toughest coach," Johnson said. "He's going to be on you from when the whistle starts to the whistle blows, (from) when the play starts and when the play ends. From day one he's told us that he's going to be extremely hard on us. In meetings, he gets on us. Out here, he gets on us. From day one, he laid his mark: He's going to be very tough."

I have had the pleasure to talk and watch Coach Hoke in action. He understand this position well. Johnson has impressed me this Fall. He and Reid are both really good players and steals from South Florida.

Deandre Johnson is going to be the steal of this last recruiting class

I'm really surprised that he's possibly ready THIS season. Thought he'd definitely need this year to develop. :eek:hmy:

Totally serious, I hope he can develop some of them to be downright dirty, nasty, rule breaking, terrorist on the field. Eye Gouging, biting, knee twisting, throat punching, b@ii ripping, injury causing maniacs who get in other players heads and keep the other teams trainers in a panic.. Time for some payback!! Sportsmanship is overrated.

I wonder if Kyle Phillips moves to DT. Watching some videos of him running, he definitely looks pretty big for a DE

We are having serious problems with our DTs staying healthy. Phillips also can't get a break with his shoulder it seems. It used to work out great when a lineman also wrestled in HS.
