This would be one of the greatest cities/football teams ever if we supported our team, but somehow we just can't realize we aren't the powerhouse we think we are and feel we deserve the moon constantly. This program has won 10 or more games 16% of the time in its history. Besides bama, no team in the sec had a better record than us this year yet Knoxville is burning down today. Why are we so historically crazy?

So what you're saying is we need to lower our expectations? We need to realize we are never going to compete for the east, let alone the SEC or the National Championship? We should expect to be in dogfights with every team on our schedule that is not FCS level?

No, he's saying our fan base is full of lunatics. The same fan base that showed up at jerry world for bama vs sc(w) with a banner that said they're gonna beat bama twice, once in the sec championship. Before the vols had even played a snap this season

No what I'm saying is support Ur team, yell loud at games, suck it up Sunday morning when we lose and stop thinking we are the 72 dolphins every preseason and realize its college football. If Ur upset about the results, don't spend Ur money on it. But if I were a coach/player, I'd have a hard time coming here with the reactions we always have. And we shoot ourselves in the foot by being that way as fans. Like it or not

UT has every conceivable advantage and resource to win big and we keep putting crap on the field. If you are ok with that, then I can't help you. The rest of us want more.

We lost to Vandy. This is what should happen when you lose to Vanderbilt. The coaching staff is a joke. A horrible joke.

I think the majority of our fans are very realistic. However, I also don't think that it's too much to ask, that if you have the most talent in the East by a mile, that at least you reach the SEC championship. How is that being crazy?

By a mile? Maybe we had more talent. Maybe not. But whatever talent edge we may have had was negated by all the injuries. And that's a fact.

Tennessee is historically a Top 10 All Time Winning Program, in my opinion I don't think it's unrealistic to expect the Vols to compete for the SEC East and Conference Championships on a somewhat periodic basis, and when the opportunity presents itself a chance to compete in the Playoffs for the National Title. We were supposed to compete this year on paper, but we don't play games on paper, and in all honesty losing to Vanderbilt is just not acceptable. Also, one point about not winning 10 games in a season more often, for many years, even into the 1960's, college football seasons were limited to 10 regular season games for the most part, we didn't start playing 11 regular season games on a consistent basis until the 1970's. When you look at how many games we have won, number of conference championships, winning seasons, etc.. Tennessee should expect to be a more competitive and better football team at this moment. I credit Coach Jones for bringing in some good, quality talent but he and his staff have failed to develop that talent so far to this point to their fullest potential. Just the thoughts of a Vols fan since 1972. Go Big Orange!

OP's stat is a red herring considering that Vols played 9 or less games per season at least 25 seasons in their history. Depending on how you factor in the ties, Butch's winning percentage at UTK is somewhere between 8%-11% below the all time, pre-Butch winning percentage. He's not the worst we've ever had. I think the more pressing questions are have to do with where the program is headed right now. We're not developing talent, the recruiting class isn't very impressive, the in-game coaching has been erratic, everyone assumes that UGA & UF will get better soon and there's no reason to doubt it, Vols keep losing winnable games every season under Jones, and almost all of our top playmakers will be gone next year. I'm sure there's more. I think that there's a potential for massive damage to be done to the program if Jones stays one more season. I also have no idea who we'd replace him with or who would make that decision if a change was made in the next month or two. I don't like the idea of operating out of fear but it seems like that may be the chief motivator on both sides, fear of change versus fear of not changing.

Everyone else had injuries. The difference is that their staffs actually spent Spring and Summer developing young players and they were able to get young guys some playing time in the walkovers because they didn't have to worry about losing to the likes of Appy State. When those programs got hit with injuries, they were prepared. Our staff...I don't know?

This is not a "process", it's a dumpster fire. And it isn't going to put itself out.

Very screwed numbers.

We played 10 or fewer games for most of the first half of the program's history. 12 game seasons have only been around since 2006.

Newsflash : Every fan base is like this. When you help pay someone what college coaches make, you expect a lot. We can't win then all. I get that. Butch lost me when he bailed at the press conference. He has taken no ownership and left his players twisting.

I don't think that's the difference. It's true that everyone has injuries. But if you can name a team that had as many games missed by key contributors as we did, then I would be surprised -- and I might even change my mind and agree with you.

I have spent over 7,000 the past three years "supporting" this team. What else should I be doing?

Our backups are probably more talented. But experience, maturity and overall team chemistry factor in there, too.
