Hire Jerod Mayo as DC

Honestly, I could see JM as a General Manager, if UT added that position, before I could see him as a DC or assistant coach.
What exactly are the duties of the GM? How is he qualified for the job? Just because he has a history with the program doesn't mean he is fit for every job in the department. Experience counts. You don't learn on the job as a coordinator at a program like ours....at least I hope not.

What’s his resume look like in college football.Drop the VFL status and you’ve got Monte Kiffin who was lost against a spread.
NFL offenses are more spread out now than they used to be. Look no further than Matt Patricia at Ohio State he has them doing good and they are ready for the NFL. I think Jared Mayo with Rodney Garner and Ingle would be great get a safety and corner back coach and convince Heupel to just be a head coach and give up play calling.

How was Andrew Luck qualifed to be Stanford's GM? I honestly don't know what qualifies someone for that position. From what I've seen, the job includes recruiting, fundraising and player support. Not sure how one gets qualified for all of that

I agree with that, but I think he could bring more discipline/grit which I think has been lacking from the program. I doubt we move on from the DC though
Why do you think Mayo would bring more grit and discipline than other candidates? The critiques of his head coaching behavior did not inspire confidence....

Lack of experience, discipline, focus, and aptitude generally - he simply didn't get better at any of his HC duties - are most listed reasons for his dismissal. He'd have the same obstacles at TN, basically being a LB coach taking over DC with no contacts, nor experience in a role arguably more demanding than being an NFL DC.

Mayo first needs to establish his credentials for being DC at a mid-team.

Someone would qualify by having top-down organizational experience and is a disciplined, knowledgeable business manager; that's a GM's role. Danny White would delineate where the GM leaves off and the HC role begins. To my mind, the GM should report to the AD, and the HC to the GM. The GM needs to be a sanity-check on the head coach.

As with DC, let Jerod do this somewhere else - successfully - first.

the-role-of-general-managers
Several forces have catalyzed the rise of GMs in the college space:
  • Transfer portal freedom: Student-athletes can now transfer schools with greater ease and eligibility flexibility, leading to a more dynamic roster management environment.
  • NIL monetization: Schools are increasingly supporting student-athletes in capitalizing on NIL, requiring coordination with collectives, brands and compliance officials.
  • Recruiting complexity: Scouting, evaluation and long-term recruiting strategy now warrant a full-time, professionalized approach.

Key Responsibilities of College GMs

Although the role varies by institution, the following functions commonly fall within the college GM’s purview:

Roster Management
  • Projecting scholarship allocations
  • Tracking eligibility and attrition
  • Coordinating with coaching staff on positional needs
Recruiting Operations
  • Overseeing high school and transfer recruiting
  • Managing recruiting databases and communication
  • Strategizing evaluation periods and official visits
NIL and Compliance Integration
  • Collaborating with NIL collectives and school-affiliated entities
  • Ensuring alignment with compliance frameworks
  • Educating student-athletes on opportunities and limitations
Personnel Strategy
  • Supporting staff hiring and contract planning
  • Aligning departmental goals with athletic and academic performance
External Relations
  • Representing the program in media or public-facing roles
  • Facilitating donor and booster engagement when applicable
