High Hopes

It was a vicious cycle. JG kept missing 3rd down throws to keep the offense on the field and help the running game . . . but he was having to make 3rd down throws because we didn't run it well enough to stay out of 3rd and long.

...but somehow we moved the ball enough. Think about how nuts it is that we picked up 21 1st downs on a night when we were 1/12 on 3rd down??
Yes. Pretty incredible.

Hopefully JG will settle in and show that he truly has improved this week. Bama only had 111 yds rushing and an average of 3.08 ypc. That vicious cycle better get fixed this week or it could be an embarrassing loss to a bad team.

I just don't know. My impression from the brief interview with Pruitt at the half was that the OL was about to get lit up.

One of my complaints with JG's misses of open guys was that it stopped drives. Plus if he hits those throws then the safeties have to play back... helping the run game. Even so... UT's OL should have controlled the LOS from the first snap. Really troubling that they didn't.
I was more disappointed in the OL than anything. About everything else that was not up to what we hoped it would be wasn’t to surprising .
The OL has been called by some one of the best in the country, and if that’s the case, we should hardly ever see losses or no gains when we run it.

Then he sucked it up the rest of the game and the rest of the time he played. JG played aggressive last night if all you care about is aggressiveness. Plus that wasn't a road game
Sucked it up? The following week he got the team in the red zone 3/4 times and averaged nearly 14 yards a carry (3 carries) and accounted for over 100 yards of offense (61 passing, 41 rushing) in a little over a quarter. If he hadn’t gotten hurt by landing on his head that game gets really ugly for MSU imo. The week after he he had us toe to toe with Alabama! Are you kidding? He didn’t “suck it up”. He made mistakes but he was also consistently making plays.

Dude he threw TWO redzone picks in the MSU game. JG had to come off the bench and save the day. The Bama game, JG kept us toe and toe with Bama until he called his own number. The kentucky game, Maurer was doing absolutely nothing and JG had to come save the day again.

Appears we're stuck with him too. Pruitt is not going to yank him and as bad as he is, he is also tough enough to not get hurt. He's never going to get any better and yet he will be there behind center next week. Nightmare that won't end.
And could be behind center again next year 😱

I admitted he made mistakes in that game however I’m not sure that “sucked it up” is an accurate term to describe his overall performance. When a qb throws his first 7 passes, completed 4 and already has over 60 passing yards, the defense had no answer for him. If you think about what I just said out of those 7 passes he only threw 1 incomplete pass between the 20s. When that same qb also has 3 carries for 40+ yards, it shows the defense was being humiliated by said qb. If you want to say he “sucked it up” in the red zone.... I can agree. But saying he “sucked it up” for that GAME? You’re out of your mind.
And idk where you’re getting that JG “saved the day”. Or maybe you just misspelled Tyler Bird because JG threw the ball all of 3 yards downfield and TB did the rest. JG however came in and Chaney only threw the ball enough to keep the defense honest. He had ONE big play to Keyton.

The Bama game I think you may need to rewatch. BM tied the score 7-7 in the first quarter. Bama scores again on their next drive and BM was driving the field at will before St. Nick seen enough and sent in a freshman LB to take a cheap shot to his head. Once again he only threw 7 passes completing 6 of them (I say 6 because one was JJs 🎁 int). That game got out of hand the MOMENT Maurer went down.

The UK game I’ll give you. Maurer did look bad on a short leash coming off of injury. However “sucked” is a stretch. “Not himself” is a more accurate statement. I find it funny that his haters seem to forget that the defense couldn’t get off the field on the opening drive that ate up almost the ENTIRE first qtr. He got the ball once in that qtr and went 3 and out. Which means he didn’t have a single yard of offense until the second qtr. where he finished the half with 120 yards of total offense (98 passing 20 rushing). In that game I’ll say JG saved the day. He played great and got the W. But a 120 yard qtr for a qb is far from “sucking it up”. When a qb is talented enough to look like chit while being on pace for a 360 yard game...... I’ll say you don’t know what “sucks” looks like and that’s a qb that deserves time and opportunity. Those that don’t want to give it to him, don’t truly want a good QB.

Pretty sure JG completed 6 of his 7 passes against State and led TD scoring drives his 1st 2 series vs KY, made it look easy really. Your excuses for BM are weak, especially if a QB as bad as the neverJG crowd says plays nearly perfect those two games all while you're coming up with excuse after excuse for the QB that played far from perfect in either game.
JG saved us from 2 sure losses had BM finished both of those games.

We were up 7-3 when BM went out....then we had such trust in your savior we ran the ball 10 straight times...lol....Saved is the MSU game is a straight lie
...and for KY tough to develop a rhythm when your off the field for over 21 minutes of the half...but once the defense stop KY...we scored the next series......context is good...after that it BM went 3 and out..the defense stopped again then we drove to the 35. Fg range and got a penalty ....I dont think overcoming 10 points is saving the day...but we can disagree on that part....JG played well till KY adjusted...

REMEBER now BM hadn't played since Bama..if JG had solidified himself as the starter why start BM??? Also your still comparing a RSJR to a true freshman.....just stop there shouldn't be a comparison....the fact there was is a problem

What’s weak about complete truth? In fact tbh using complete truth IS the strongest argument. It’s why you and your boy KTown disappear when you can no longer defend your dishonest positions. You attempted to criticize Maurer just yesterday with a comparison to Dobbs. Using the complete truth it backfired on you. You disappeared and suddenly had nothing relevant to say when the comparison was made and it revealed that Maurer may be just as good or possibly even better if given time. You are 0-1 at this point trying to prove that there was ever a qb with a more daunting task in front of him as a true freshman than Maurers. So until you can find a lie in my posts, you can’t call my “excuses” weak because you’re simply out of ammo.

Casey Clausen was 6-0 his Fr season and started that streak vs Alabama. BM has done absolutely nothing that the Vol fanbase hasn't already seen before. I take that back, I've never seen a QB get that many starts and never finish the game.

Wow. What a fan. Taking shots a kid who got hurt....disgraceful and disgusting

Lol. Keep trying!
You legit made a snide comment about a freshman that got taken out 2x cuz of injury and 1x coach's choice......you have a unhealthy obsession....think about if BM was one on your recruits and some person made a comment like that about him...

Wonder what dee's parents would think?

6-0 vs WHO Pulaski? Did he face #3 or higher in that 6-0 start? Did he face #1 at any point? If so did he face such highly ranked teams WITHIN his first 3 starts? I’m ASKING you to prove me wrong here and I’m GIVING you every opportunity to do so. So far you’re drawing a blank. If you can’t provide proof that it’s happened before then I feel it’s safe to say that BM had the toughest start as a true freshman in UT history. So blaming him for injury or stats is just plain stupid.

As for taking a shot at his injury..... you should really question your fandom after a remark like that. He got injured doing exactly what all those players tap the sign for. He was giving his ALL for Tennessee and if anything you should respect that rather than criticize.

I understand that we did not come out of the gate looking great.... BUT its WAY freaking better than the way started last year.

Just sharing my thoughts.

So I just did some Casey Clausen research and he did go 6-0 in his first 6 starts. However the ONLY ranked team he played within that stretch was #17 USCe in his second start. You’re now 0-2 in discrediting Maurer. It’s looking more and more like you may have to admit that Maurer had the toughest start of any freshman qb in UT history.

There’s a reason BM isn’t starting for UT. He’s far too reckless with the ball and his own health. With his size, he needs to stop trying to make defenders miss on scrambles and just slide or dive. JG is the guy for now because he’s careful with the ball, almost to a fault sometimes. BM is the total opposite, and the MSU game is a prime example of that. You absolutely cannot turn the ball over in the red area and expect to win. CJP knows this and BM did so twice in the first half. I have no reservations against BM(I actually love his swagger), but it’s pretty obvious why he isn’t the guy yet. I expect QB play in 2021 to take a tremendous leap forward regardless of who is out there.

Once again keep trying. Saying a QB didn't make it to the end of any game he started is hardly crapping on BM or making fun of his injuries, I don't think he was injured vs Ky when he played either so not sure how you took that one. My criticism of BM has been what it always was, he wasn't ready physically or mentally last season and we've not seen much of him yet this season to know if he's made strides in either area. I'm sure I'll fight for Dee on here as hard as I do for JG should folks throw out pure hyperbole and bs about him as they do our QB1.

Like I do Maurer against your bs?

Btw.......
You may want to pay attention to the new thread. Not ONE qb has ever had a tougher start to his career than Maurer so far.

I’m gonna jump in here! I’m not the one that said the overthrows would have been TD’s, but every overthrow was at crucial time, hence our 3rd down production. Plus add in that ridiculous catch by Brandon Johnson that bailed JG out of an awful decision on 3rd and short. He is Bipolar to say the least. He will NEVER get us to the next level.
Great catch, there were also some drops

Another good one, this is average time to throw the last few years, might explain his .pct on passes over 10 yards.

I think we should all be thankful that This isn't the same JG we saw in the first two games last year. He was a train wreck then. In his first game this year he made great decisions, he made the best scramble that I have ever seen him make, and wild throws are usually an indication that a player is just too amped up. Let's hope he settles down so his accuracy improves. Is he the most talented QB on the roster right now? No. That title belongs to Harrison Bailey, but he isn't ready yet. Maybe next year.
