Dang. We need to get Coach Barnhill back to Knoxville
John Barnhill served as Tennessee’s head coach from 1941–1945, compiling an impressive 32–5–2 record (.872 winning percentage), which still stands as the best in program history for coaches with multiple seasons. A former lineman under General Robert Neyland, Barnhill stepped into the role when Neyland left for military service during World War II, and he maintained the Volunteers’ national prominence with disciplined, fundamentally strong teams. His squads went undefeated in 1944, finishing ranked in the top 15, and he successfully bridged the program through the war years until Neyland’s return. Though his tenure was short, Barnhill’s remarkable winning percentage and steady leadership preserved Tennessee’s status as a powerhouse in college football’s wartime era.

Considering what Heupel inherited versus what Smart and Kelly did, Heupel's record is damn impressive.

Should read up on "Barnie" Barnhill.
Played under Neyland in the late 20s.
Coached under Neyland, then took over as HC AND AD during WW2 in place of Neyland.
After Neyland returned, Barnhill was hired at Arky as HC and AD where he had a decent career that only lasted 4yrs as HC due to a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
He left coaching to be AD full time until 1971 where he was responsible for hiring the one and only Frank Broyles.

But, yeah, I would take another John Barnhill on The Hill.

What's the asterisk on Stoop's record?

I'm actually fairly surprised with Napier. I thought he was doing worse but he is actually doing okay depending on his this season goes.

He put in a really unappreciated coaching job last season. Overcame a weak start and corresponding turmoil to finish strong.

That thing looked like it was going off the rails for a bit.
