That's with conservative spending as opposed to Texas, LSU, TA&M, OHIO St., ect. Word is, we're going to hit the portal like never before this January. Portal ranking better be, at least, in the top 3 with where we're ranked in HS recruiting.

NIL spending is now the most important metric in determining a program’s success. And we are behind the leaders in our conference.

Our portal ranking will be proportional to the amount of money we have to spend.

The folks who think it has more to do with our coaches’ recruiting abilities (and I’m not saying you are one of them) are living way in the past.

They seem to be opening up the big safe for G. Georges. Having to out bid Oh St. take many $. So the theory they don't have or won't spend NIL $ does not seem to be true for who they want.

Uhh, yeah. GMac isn’t a true freshman either. It’s the same situation. The QB’s are inexperienced just like Nico was. Your’re also making my point for me. The point was that you can have success with a young QB if you have the pieces around him. UT has a top 5 SEC OL, top 3 SEC RB, & a top 5 SEC WR core. They literally made the playoffs with a guy that you just said wasn’t even close to the reason they made the playoffs. An argument can be made that the current offense has a better supporting cast than 2024 so why can’t they have success with a young QB??
IF Gmac doesn't get beat out by a true freshman. also Bishop is not on the level of Dylan Sampson and we won't have anything close to peak Tim Banks defense in 2026. also Nico didn't play a 9 game SEC schedule. we don't have the same situation now that we had in 24 and with the portal teams with graduate QBs will end us.

IMO bishop could be on the level of Sampson, I wouldn’t use absolutes saying he’s not. He ran for 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. Sampson had 600 yards and 7 touchdowns before he exploded in 2024. Did anyone in the preseason expect Sampson to be the workhorse back he was or expect him to be as effective as a workhouse back as he was? No. But people are considering bishop could be a workhorse back.

Agree, a loss in this recruitment may very well affect their future NIL spending for recruits so hope it works out.
Also, the perceived opinion from fans/media on the future of the program under Heupel appears to be at a tipping point. This commitment would serve as a massive vote of confidence from an elite player! The alternative is equally as big the other direction.

I would argue that Nico would have been significantly worse than Aguilar. He wasn't good for the Vols. He might have been worse all things and competition included at UCLA.

I really like Heupel as a coach and a man. I think he's a good guy. Two knocks. One, he should never hired Banks or tolerated him as long as he did. Heupel should never tolerate a DC that doesn't challenge him and frequently beat him in scrimmage. The DC should be as good at his job as Heupel is as an offensive coach. The other more concerning one is that he's made some pretty big errors with players. It took a "fortunate" injury to Milton for Hooker to show out. They went all in on Nico. Same with Carter. Now with Coleman. I think he's done a much better job coaching players than choosing the right ones to coach.
Let’s not forget it took him until year 6 to figure out strength and conditioning needs to be a priority.

That's a reach. Every S&C I can remember being hired has been hailed as the "greatest" and a great "difference maker". Heupel hasn't ignored it or failed to prioritize it. The whole thing is a "what have you done for me lately" business. It wasn't seen as a weakness before either because it wasn't hurting or it wasn't at the top of the list.

I couldn't even tell you the name of the S&C coach before Owings. I certainly don’t remember anyone ever singing the praises of a coach under Heupel. I don’t remember getting updates on gains and losses:

I give him credit for going out and getting best.

I do. I bet if you searched the archives you could find threads here talking about the S&C coach being a "great hire". Kurt Schmidt had been with Heupel for 9 years @ Mizzou, UCF, and UT. He spent time with the 49ers before that. He was praised for getting the most out of the 2/3* players at Mizzou and UCF.

By no stretch was he a "failure" at UT. Sometimes growth requires you to look for better even if you have "good".

If you say so. I couldn’t tell you his name and don’t recall any of those discussions. That Ohio State game is the epitome of failure. Seeing a bunch of fat, out of shape players with their shirts off made it all the worse.

The most out of 2/3rds is not good. Out of 100 players, roughly 66 players are getting good work and the most out of their workouts, and 44 are not. 2/3rds sounds good percentage wise but when you look at how many players are on a college football roster and scale it to that number, you don’t get a good ratio

Also, when he was with the 49ers, they were good one of those years, mediocre one of those years, and dogshit the other two

He was talking about 2** and 3*** players, not giving a percentage.

Yeah. That is pretty bad. Frustrating game for sure. And Georgia. Both at home no less.

Heupel could be "the" guy.

NOT till he LEARNS how to "Manage The Game from the Sideline!"

*It's the "Elephant in the Room"...EVERYBODY has seen it EVERY Season...with NO REAL SENSE of Corrective Measures...

WHAT'S IT GONNA TAKE, Josh??!!

Not 2/3s. 2 AND 3 star players.

Bishop is a top 3 SEC RB same as Sampson was and Sampson wasn’t coming off a 17TD season when he did what he did in 2024. The OL is also better than the 2024 OL and so are the WR’s. We don’t know how good the defense will be. The DL isn’t as deep but the back 7 is probably better overall. Yall keep crying about the schedule and I’m just not seeing it. Idc if it’s 9 conference games, we have the 13th hardest schedule in the SEC and it’s only 16 teams
