He's baaack! Fulmer grasps comparisons.

What's more sad is that, if the Vols had been bowl eligible, Fulmer would be UT's head coach right now.

5-7 was necessary, unfortunately.

Not true. Fulmer was let go after South Carolina. If we beat Wyoming, Vandy, and UK. We are bowl eligible and Phil is still out.

I probably should have clarified. I wasn't suggesting that a win over Wyoming, and a 6-6 record would have kept Fulmer at Tennessee.

I meant that the odds are fair that something like 8-4 would have been more of the same mediocrity, and it would have brought him back for one more season.

5-7, 6-6, or 3-9...it doesn't matter...failure was necessary to get him off the sidelines.

Fulmer seemed displeased that his assistant coaches weren’t given quicker notice that Kiffin wouldn’t retain them.

Clawson and everybody on the defensive side of the ball were fired on the Sunday before the Monday morning press conference to announce Kiffin.

you know, I just wish he had done that while still a coach at UT. But I'm really wondering what new stuff he will learn from Cut that he didn't see in the many years they spent together
Duke and Indianapolis I can understand, but what kind of ties does Fulmer have to the Dolphins and tOSU?

You do realize that you've opened yourself to criticism and being called "not a real fan", don't you? There will be some that say by you admitting that change could only be made by us going 5-7 or worse, that you "may have been" actually hoping we lose to bring about the necessary change...

I would say CPF's system had much better results (at a higher level) than Clawson's.

I agree somewhat . Everywhere that Clawson came to his offense was dismal is year 1 . I think he went 4-8 year one at Richmond with terrible production but grew in year 2 and 3 ...and in year 4 the offense was overwhelmingly explosive .

The progression suggests that a player needs to start as a freshman and develope within his system ...which is everything that I have heard and was spelled out in the article with Josh Briscoe . It is a very complex O system .

Also the fact that that PF never let DC run the true CLAWFENCE . What you saw last season was a hybrid between the Al Saunders UT offense and the CLAWFENSE .

DC will be excellent when he is given TIME to implement HIS system

Personally I have alot of faith in Chaney and Kiffin , glad the Phil offense is over

Coaches know coaches. OSU is doing some new stuff offensively this year (so far) to try to take more advantage of Pryors great skill set.....and Miami was ahead of the game in the NFL running that Wild Cat set.

The more I read about practices from then and now I think that Cut was tired of being Fulmer's administrative assistant. It is clear that without Cut, Fulmer did not have the organizational skill to keep up with every aspect of the football team.

Agree 100%. IMO, Cutcliffe was the reason Fulmer had so much success. However, Fulmer sat back and received all the glory and looked like a hall of fame coach. If you look at what Fulmer did when Cutcliffe was his OC and when he wasn't, it is very clear. I believe Cut was also his disciplinarian as well.

yes great post. This is why Fulmer needed to go. Did he bring us a lot of good years? absolutely but this is why he needed to go.

1. when he had great coaches more or less Cutcliffe, Fulmer was dominant.

2. After Cutcliffe left Fulmer had I think like 9 YEARS to get a real OC but never ever did it.

3. Hiring Clawson was a huge mistake with all the top notch OC's out there. Some Vol fans were excited. I wasn't. D-2 and D-1 are not the same

4. Clawson didn't know what he was doing. You could tell by his play calling. UCLA wanted to throw it 40 times instead of running. aGAINST Florida Clawson never thought of doing a QB sneak on the freakin 1 yard line. Anybody who knows about play calling saw he was way over his head. This isn't Richmond it's the SEC stacked full of NFL bound players. HUGE DIFFERENCE.

5. Tired of hearing what he did at Richmond. That's D-2 this is D-1 where the real players and coaches are. All three UT qb's looked lost last year. That's coaching

6. Fulmer lacked discipline which is what these young players need. How many got arrested in 05?

7. Here is the big one, Fulmer never had the gonads to tell Chavis to give up that stupid Mustang package and to tell him to stop playing so far off of players. 3rd and 2 lets be 15 yards off the line.

Plain and simple Fulmer had 9 years to get a real OC and never did. Just hope Lane is our new man.

The only thing I take issue with is your comment about Clawson being a D-2 coach and looking down on that. Jim Tressel came from D-2 (Youngstown State). There are good coaches on each level.

Getting technical, Richmond and Youngstown State are (actually used to be) D-1 AA. Carson Newman, Tusclum are D-2, so on.

You're right... I was just piggy backing off of what the original post was saying and didn't pay attention to that subtlety.

Has anybody seen a recent article by Jimmy Hyams with Fulmer where he said that he was on the verge of righting the ship because he had a 3rd ranked recruiting class?

amazing that Jimmy still hasn't gotten the news there was a coaching change. Maybe he'll realize it in the fall
