That brings back some memories... I was 9 and remember getting Bobby Majors autograph during a field trip to Neyland the spring before this bowl game.

Do. Not. Want.

Rather be in Charlotte or Nashville over Memphis.

But would prefer Memphis to Birmingham or Shreveport.

The 1971 Liberty Bowl(where UT may go this season).

The Liberty Bowl 1971

Everything depends on how many SEC lower tier teams make it to bowl eligibility.

If Tennessee wins out they will be 7-5 and probably go to the Music City Bowl against either Georgia Tech or Penn State. Playing Tech is a long-time old rival that we used to play yearly until the SEC reorg and Tech leaving for the ACC. Penn St. would be a great game in that the Vols have a three game losing streak in bowls to the Lions and Franklin is their coach with no love lost plus him bringing his team to Nashville where he had success with Vandy and a two game winning streak over Tennessee. If Tennessee goes 6-6 it would probably drop to the Liberty Bowl and play either West Virginia or the winner of Texas v. Oklahoma St. The loser of that game is probably out of the bowl scene. A WVA v. UT game would have plenty of offense and a UT v. UT game would be a good match-up between Butch Jones and Charlie Strong. Even at 6-6 and with UK losing to UT and beating Louisville and S Carolina winning two more games I don't think the Vols will drop down to Birmingham or Shreveport. If the Vols are 7-5 and riding a 4 game winning streak they could get selected for the Taxslayer Bowl in Jacksonville against probably Minnesota. But again, the BIG ORANGE has to win two more games before thinking about a bowl game.

I want a Tennessee/Clemson matchup in Charlotte. We still owe them one and it can help recruiting in NC. JMHO

I was 13 & remember telling my dad that if Tennessee lost to Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl I wasn't going to have a Merry Christmas. I had a Merry Christmas!

I was there. I remember how cold it was. The stadium was packed. Curt Watson made a great run for the winning TD on at least two broken ribs( he was wearing a flap jacket designed by George Cafego). Heck of a game and a great night for Tennessee.

Except for Coach Battle who lost his father to a heart attack in the stands.

Thanks to Carl Witherspoon for pulling the ball away in the pile from an Arkansas player to give us the ball back so Curt Watson could run it down their throats. Otherwise, Arky would have taken this game.

I remember some nightclub in Memphis played that game over and over on the big screen in back of the multi lighted dance floor. Rick Dees [ of disco duck fame] was the DJ. Anyone here remember back that far?

Carl Witherspoon was the Arkansas running back that "fumbled" the football. I'm suprised that website never mentioned him.

I'd be careful what I was asking for. A nice confidence building cupcake would suit me just fine!

No Carl was a Vol! I played HS football with him at Karns. He played two years Jr. College ball at Lees Mcrae then two at UT.

Sometimes I start to feel old when I remember games from my childhood in the late 80s and early 90s. You old farts reminiscing over a game played in 71 is making me start to feel young again.:)

I was 7 at the time. I can sort of remember us being in the Liberty Bowl.

My father had stepped out of the room for some reason. My mother yelled at him "We scored a TD, and guess who ... "that boy named after your son!". My oldest brother's name is Curt.

Dang, I had no idea that info was still in my brain until I read this. Thanks for the memories. Literally. :eek:k:

The 100 years of Volunteers video screwed it up also. They said Witherspoon fumbled the ball and Tennessee recovered leading to the Curt Watson winning TD

Carl Witherspoon played DL for Tennessee; he was not a running back and did not play for Arkansas. The previous poster is correct in saying Carl played HS football at Karns. Carl pulled the ball away from an Arkansas player in a pile and Tennessee won the game; Curt Watson scoring a touchdown.

Not just in NC but SC as well, think of the sell job you have with recruits in SC if you beat USC and Clemson.

Coach Battle's father died in the stands during the 1974 Liberty bowl against Maryland not the '71 game. I was at the '74 game and it was easily the coldest game I have ever attended.
