Respert has been admitted to the hospital. Infection in his hand.
Douglas will probably not play Saturday and it looks like neither will Fellows, with Wade starting in his place.

This has gotten comical. This may be the the worst year injury-wise that I've ever seen any team have.

What is the word on Prugh's ankle?

He's ready to go.

As for injuries this year doesn't touch 2002

You know, I thought that 2002 was just a freak season with injuries, but now I have to wonder! Who is in charge of strength and conditioning? Why does it seem like our players are getting injured or having more problems than most any team. Either we are just having some bad luck or there is something wrong in the program!

Must be one hell of an infection to land him in the hospital - something beyond a hangnail.

"Keith Clements, Head Athletic Trainer, reported that Dr. Val Gene Iven admitted center Jason Respert to the hospital Wednesday for treatment of a hand infection.

"I don't anticipate this affecting his participation status for this weekend," Clements said. "He remains probable and we will evaluate Jason daily."

While Respert is expected to play, Fulmer does not foresee Cody Douglas making an appearance. Douglas has battled a foot injury since the Georgia game and team doctors want to rest his ailment at least another week.

Clements added that two other Tennessee football players underwent surgery last week.

Jake Finlayson underwent low back surgery Friday in Los Angeles. Dr. Robert Watkins, world renowned for his work with lower back injuries, performed the operation and Clements said the procedure went as expected to repair a disc injury.

Finlayson will miss the remainder of the season. He is expected to have a limited spring practice return, with full recovery expected by the 2005 season.

Bill Grimes had arthroscopic surgery Nov. 9 on his knee at UT Medical Center. Drs. Greg Mathien and Russell Betcher performed the procedure. Grimes could return for bowl practice and be available for Tennessee's bowl game."

A simple cut can turn into a staph infection. If that is the case, they'll have him on some heavy antibiotics... its very serious... and if untreated, life threatening. My brother got a staph infection on a 'strawberry' burn while sliding into 2nd base playing softball. After a few days, he could not walk because his whole leg became infected... he had to go to the hospital. There was a chance that he would lose his leg if the antibiotics did not work. Took almost a year for the skin on his leg to completely heal. Ended up being pretty serious for something similar to a rug burn.

Guess I'm qualified to expand on that. . . .

If, indeed, it is cellulitis (a sort of deep skin infection), then Staphylococcus aureus (or "staph") is one of the most common causes. Most of these infections can be treated as an outpatient. However, certain strains of the bacteria have developed resistance to conventional antibiotics and can be quite aggressive. (That's why we're trying to limit unnecessary exposure to antibiotics through over-prescribing). If his infection is due to a highly resistant organism, is spreading rapidly, or involves the tendons, bones, or other deep structures, he likely requires at least an initial course of IV antibiotics, which would be a reason for hospitalization. Some infections also require surgical drainage or debridement -- like abscesses (or "risens" for you true Southerners).

'Course, this is VOLUNTEER football. . . .and there's always "home nursing."

kiddie, funny post. Thanks for the information.

It does seem like we have had more injuries in the past two or three years than other teams, of course I don't follow the other programs and could be mistaken.

But I will say in key positions like QB this year losing to Notre Dame and 2002 losing to Georgia with Clausen have hurt our program.

'Welcome. And yeah, we have had a run of bad luck (or, poor conditioning???) over the past few years. Hard to imagine that just 2 weeks ago, here we were devising a way to feed Auburn to our two-headed-monster in the SECCG. Now, we've turned to wailing over the ND debaucle, posts on Kentucky and Vandy (which should be gimme "W's"), and trying not to imagine how badly we'll get beaten in Atlanta. Don't get me wrong. . . .I'll be yelling as loud as I can, but don't expect to see me putting money on the outcome!

It's weird, but when we lost Simon early on, I just got this sinking feeling like. . . . .no. . . . .not again.

Well, folks. . . .Again.

Lets look at it
Simon Torn up Knee --- Conditioning has nothing to do with it.
Schaeffer broke collarbone ---- Same as above, but he does need to learn to duck
Ainge separated shoulder ---- Mistakes cost UT that one from the coaches(confusion) to the oline(again confusion and a leg whip) to Ainge himself (multipiles here --- Not watching the snap, supposed to be under center in first place, trying to pick up ball instead of falling on it.)

Conditioning seems pretty good if you look at the amount of teams that cramp up and the few you see at UT that does, the biggest thing this year is 8 in a row and not just any 8 UF, La Tech(only easy game), Auburn, UGA, Ole Miss, ALA, SC and ND. 7 of those 8 are physical teams and 6 are SEC opponents who we all know play each other hard.

also consider that Douglas and Respert have had some kind of leg injury every year they have been at UT and Munoz has had some kind of injury also. The only lineman that hasn't seemed to have gotten hurt is the most aggressive one Rob Smith. Hmmm maybe that is the problem the line plays to passive.

Conditioning usually shows up in the 4th quarter of ballgames.... where the Vols have typically been playing their best ball this season.

I heard today that Cody Douglas may miss the rest of the season.
