While driving home from work in Atlanta this evening, I was listening to 680 TheFan sports station and Herb Herbstreet was on with the usual hosts of the evening show, i.e. Buck Belue and John Kincaid. (sorry about the spelling) Herb calls in every Monday to discuss the past weekends games. Buck specifically asked Herb if he thought CPF was on the "hotseat."

Herb responded by saying he usually doesn't like to talk about coaches on the hotseat in that it is a very sensitive topic. However, in this case, he did talk about it. He said that he felt if CPF is shown the door after the season, it won't be because of this season's performance, it will be the result of the past eight seasons' performance. He said that starting in 1999, the UT Football program is basically an 8-4 program. He stated that if UT is happy with a consistent 8-4 team, then CPF is safe. He also stated that if UT goes 8-4 or worse this season that February will be very interesting in Knoxville.

Personally, I have a lot of respect for Herbstreet's knowledge on college football and his tendency to refer to facts rather than opinion while broadcasting. For Herbstreet to say something like that about CPF on a public radio station in a major metropolitan area sort of says a lot to me.

Personally, I don't see UT going 8-4. I also didn't believe that CPF would be fired after this season regardless of the record. However, after hearing Herbstreet's remarks, maybe the writing is on the wall.

Just wanted to alert everyone about the comments today though. It was a very somber moment for Herbstreet for some reason.

I wonder what Herbstreit of ESPN thinks?

Fulmer has to beat SC, Ark, and Ky. Even then it may not be enough. That would put UT at 9-3.

i, for one, think we need this type of negative attention because we dont have the voice to be heard. i also believe that if CPF gets fired, he will be given the opportunity to volunarily resign, which he deserves.

Well if Herbstreit says it's so, it must be so. He clearly has the most clout inside the UT administration.
And what he said was just so insightful. I've never heard anything about this post-1999 slide before.

Change is only going to come if the people controlling the purse strings start complaining (big money donors). The loss to FL was bad but the old big money donors don’t recognize them as “the” big rival. They do recognize the history and passion of the AL rivalry and after this weekend they must be fuming. Hopefully they are voicing their concerns.

herb is right..fullmer should've been gone after the '05 season. with all the talent ut has every year there is no reason for them to get blown out by cal, Fl, and a very average bama team

Who is Herb Herbstreit? Not calling out on spelling. Just wondering who Herb Herbstreit is.

I know I've mentioned this on this board before, but I just want to recommend to anybody out there who's breaking in a new girlfriend: half the time call him "Kirk Herbstreit," and the other half, "Herb Kirkstreit." I've had my wife hopelessly confused about his name for a decade now; it's still comedy gold every time she calls him "Herb," even though by now she swears she knows better.
