There were a few mentions of this feeling like 2005 earlier. I went back and looked at our roster and just at first glance there are so many names that pop out that went on to play in the NFL.
But some things reassured me about this year. That year we played with Rick Clausen as our quarterback because Ainge had suffered a major injury the season before. Randy Sanders was our offensive coorinator (enough said). We lost our best player and team captain early in the season against UGA.
Coming into 2005, Ainge was our starter the year before with a 55% completion and he didn't even start for us in 2005. Gerald Riggs was pretty decent in '04 with 1100 yard or so, but he had Cedric Houston in the backfield with him then. We had some solid defensive players but nothing like we have now.
The biggest thing is the nucleus of the team this year. They've been with each other for two years now and truly have a team mentality. We have the coaches in place, the offensive and defensive weapons in place. Also, unlike in 2005, UT has been down now for nearly a decade and got a taste of what it was like to be "good" last year. No one on this team is entitled and they're all hungry for the same thing. I was a big fan in the 2000's but I think anyone who remembers would agree: there's just a different feeling in the air this year, something that hasn't been in Tennessee in almost 20 years. This is our year!
EDIT: I'm having a hard time putting what I'm thinking into words but I guess the point I'm making is that if we look back at that season there's a lot of holes in the prediction that we would be that good (not having a seasoned QB, not having killers on our defense, not having the best RB tandem in the nation, etc.) Don't nit pick me too much please
