Guys and Gals,

I've watched every game this year a few times each and I can't help but notice every time Heffney leaves his feet and misses a tackle. I've started keeping up with it and I've never seen a DB dive at a ball carrier every time he tries to tackles someone like Heffney. Unfortunately, I suspect that he isn't coached any better than to know not to do that. Earlier in the year, several of our defensive players were diving and grabbing air but most of them have improved. Heffney, on the other hand gets my award for the most missed diving tackles in College Football. If you will watch the Arky game, you will see that the only reason that he tackled McFadden behind the line of scrimmage that one time is because McFadden tripped over him after he dove in front of his feet. Why hasn't he been shown how to tackle after 4 years and why is he still out there if he is making so many mistakes?

So, in 22 years, he's never been coached to wrap up while tackling?

If you will watch the Arky game, you will see that the only reason that he tackled McFadden behind the line of scrimmage that one time is because McFadden tripped over him after he dove in front of his feet.

And isn't that what he was trying to do by taking out McFadden's legs?

And somehow he'll be drafted by an NFL team. They should consult your assessment first.

When your as small as Hef you have to tackle low in order to take down the ball carrier otherwise he would be ran over consistently. Mayo on the other hand tackles high all the time but gets away with it because of his size and strength.

Thats a great record to go for, "stive for no.1 Hefney"!

Of course that isn't near as good as my record for most bench splinters in the butt. :)

Oh, I'm sure this is Fulmer's fault somehow. Or maybe it comes back to the fact that with hour and scholarship limits, coaches don't want to risk losing guys by doing tackling drills during practice.

Yes, diving at someone's legs is certainly a result of poor coaching, but I look at the high school coaches for this one. It's also not just Hefney, but a LOT of defensive backs who come out of high school and are taught schemes and systems but not tackling.

So was Ryan Leaf and a ton of others. Big deal.

Surely you can come up with a better example than that. Leaf was expected to be a good NFL QB, but was a self inflicted bust. Complete opposite of what this thread is saying about Hef.

Heffney has been playing hurt most of the year so maybe that had some to do with it,but he has been playing well ever since the Arkansas game.

Berry tackles very well.
Give him a year or two:). Remember guys, January is close, lets try to be optomistic. This is a HUGE week that, hopefully, will be followed by another huge week....can't we give this stuff a little rest????

Hefney is skilled in the Matador tackling technique. I wonder if actually says "O'lay" as they go bye.

Don't need to come up with a specific example as their are too many. Your point that he will be drafted and thus the analysis by the author is unworthy, is of no use. Being drafted doesn't mean squat. Tons of busts every year.

I would have moved Hefney to CB early on. It's much easier to hide a CB on a team who is a poor tackler then a safety.

OK. In order to be a bust shouldn't the expectation be high? The author is inferring there is no expectation since he "leads CF in the most missed diving tackles". Which is it then?

Yes, it would be a long shot if he got drafted and it wouldn't be considered a bust if Heffney got drafted and sucked. I would kind of expect it.
