Did he say that Nancy Pelosi is his best friend and he'll invite Harry Reid to his birthday party? Where did UT go so wrong with this guy's education?

Now, if only Shuler knew something about those issues. Not only is he inarticulate, but also pretty naive, and depending on the investigation into his land swapping might be back in Ktown some day on a UT sports show.

Heath Shuler had all the physical gifts and athlete could wish for.

He was never known for being the sharpest knife in the drawer. That was one problem he had in the NFL. He never could get a firm grasp on the complicated schemes at that level.

Nope. He's just not a very bright ex UT star (sorry for the redundancy) who had the great fortune of winning an election with the wind to his back compliments of a party out of favor.

i remember heath's postgame interviews. his grammar and diction was atrocious.

fast forward to post NFL days when i met him and heard him speak publicly. amazing transformation -- he did some serious work to improve that dramatically.

my wife had to meet with heath in washington last year over a legislative issue. she was very impressed with heath's depth of knowledge of the subject. i'm sure that he was coached up but still seemed well versed on the subject.

heath is at least a very hard worker, and at most far from being a dummy.

I recall the Shuler made good grades at UT and high school, was known as a hardworker, never drank colas, etc. Almost the southern version of Todd Marinovich, minus the overbearing father and the inability to merge into society. Maybe he never got past the hammering he took as the Redskin's QB early in his career? You always hear he couldn't handle the "nuances" of being an NFL QB. Maybe so. I do think going through about a zillion offensive coordinators in the NFL didn't help him. I think it is funny the how he has become a target for some Vol fans now that he has a political life.

A target? Hardly! People are just making observations about Shuler's lack of articulation skills, and his apparent lack of judgment (the land swapping which looks bad, at least on the surface).

In all honesty, Shuler's a long way from being anywhere near Pelosi. I work in politics, and there are a lot worse folks out there than Shuler.

To be honest, he's pretty conservative on a whole host of issues. He's pro-life, pro-border control. He's moderate on some issues, but I wish all democrats were as solid as he is.

and the fact that he couldn't learn the UT playbook in 3 years of work but is now is part of fixing the world's largest economy after 2 years.

It's only his first vote that matters. He votes for the Dems who chair the committees. After that vote, it really doesn't matter but, hey, he was a good quarterback.
