I've not played in a while, but put a lot of hours in. Also played HoI3 quite a bit, and prefer HoI3 over 4 in some respects.

I never played 3, I am assuming Paradox was still Paradox where they were pushing new content that changes tons about the actual gameplay?

That is always my issues with their games, they get the game to a good spot, and this push new content out that changes the mechanics of the game without making it any more enjoyable. then by the time you get used to the new content, they have another release. Stellaris was that way, and I have noticed it with Hoi4, and that is why I haven't gotten some of the DLC.

I try to play it but I end up feeling dumb as a rock and I get overwhelmed lol.
this is why I don't get all the DLC. seems like everyone changes a fundamental part of the game and you have to relearn how to play/balance things.

as peradox said try watching some how to videos. because even as a major power there are definitely ways to eff up or make it way more difficult on yourself

Okay, this is for the game, but Fascism is the best government system for HOI4. It gives you a +3% manpower boost each week. Definitely do that. But if you're using an Ally country, beware of a civil war because of how low in popularity it is unless you perform actions to boost its popularity.
Use that over communism! I don't care what everyone says, trust me!

I will agree with this. although as a minor minor nation communism has a "army trait" or whatever that gives you free manpower every week. Spirit of Marx I think. its how Tannu Tuva and Mongolia will lose more than their entire population in protracted wars. ever as the USSR its incredibly helpful.

A good place to experiment is South America, especially if you don't have the South American DLC. you will pretty much get left alone to do what you want. pretty hard to do a world conquest, but you can go down there and figure things out and get used to the controls and whatnot.

thats what I figured. Anytype of competitive multiplayer with a campaign just isn't my speed.

one of my favorite things to do is just bleed out the world. WW2 ends sometime in the late 50s or early 60s with 100 million dead and me owning most of the map.
Oh my lord. The longest one I got to was 1973, with my friends. we were all kinda scared to fight so I just brought out the nukes.

my main issues with nukes is how much they permanently drop your war support. just one can completely change the course of the war, without even doing that much actual damage.

I was doing a solo France run and held off the Nazis, and then the commies until they dropped a nuke on some small like 1 VP town in the middle of nowhere. completely nuked my war support (pun intended), which caused riots, which killed off my PP and later conscription.

at least now they provide a warning so you have a chance to stop it.

I will say before they became "raids" one of my favorite strategies was to declare war, pause the game, drop nukes along the entire front line, AI never had its air up to stop bombing attacks at the very start of the war, unpause, wait for them to drop, and then just walk over the glowing bodies.

its complex, and some things just still don't make sense to me. The AI gets a ton of buffs as well, even on the lower difficulties.

even most experienced players, including myself, don't really understand the way naval combat works.

I think the main thing that helps is just figuring out what is actually important. even at peace I will pretty much always have 5-10 icons up at the top that want me to do something, that aren't important and I just ignore.
