Since it was first brought up that CLK would be named our next coach VN has been riddled with the Fulmerites and Negavols on this hire.

It is time for a little education on HC hires at UT that proves Hamilton stuck with tradition.

General Robert Neyland - Was a football assistant at West Point before becoming Professor of Military Science at UT. In 1926 at the age of 34 he became the HC for the Vols with no previous HC experience. The most winningest coach in UT history. 173-31-12

Doug Dickey - Born in Vermillion SD grew up in Gainesville FL where he played QB 1951-1953. With no HC experience he was hired at the age of 32 1964-1969 as UT HC. Dickey was the one who installed the Power T on the helmets and the Power T the band forms before each home game for the players to run through. He later became HC at FL then returned to TN as AD. 46-15-4

Bill Battle - A native of Birmingham AL and played football for Alabama under Bear Bryant. Hired by UT in 1970 -1976 was the youngest HC at TN at the tender age of 28 with no HC experience. 59-22-2

Phillip Fulmer - A native of Winchester TN and played football at UT and Doug Dickey was his coach. After his playing days he went to Wichita ST as O Line coach and LB coach 1974-1978, Vanderbilt Assistant Coach 1979, Assistant Coach at UT 1980-1988, OC at UT 1989-1991, Hired as HC in 1992 with no HC experience where he coached until 2008. 152-52

Lane Kiffin - Born in Minnesota and played backup QB at Fresno St graduated in 1998. Graduate Assistant at CSU in 1999, Quality Control Assistant Jacksonville Jaguars 2000, Tight Ends Coach USC 2001, WR Coach 2002-2004,WR Coach Passing Coordinator 2004, OC 2005-2006, Raiders HC 2007-2008 Never HC at the college level. Lane Kiffen was hired Dec 1, 2008 as UT next HC at the age of 33.

Hiring a football head coach at UT with experience and from this state is not the trend. None of the coaches above ever HC at the college level. Lane Kiffin has never HC at the college level and I for one am looking forward to seeing what he can do.

I am hoping for the best here. I know it will take some time for Kiffin to turn things around though. In the press conference he jokingly said we would beat florida next year. If that were to happen I think everyone here would become a big Kiffin fan.

We will see more effort on both sides of the ball next year no doubt. I am looking towards year 2 and 3 to see the talent he will have in here and the level of play.

good post, good points. I wasn't crazy about the hire, I thought there were better candidates and was more interested in "experience" than "youth". Today though, listening on the radio, I got excited about being a Vol fan again, something that hasn't happened since late August before kickoff in Pasadena. Coack Kiffin has his work cut out for him and seems to understand that expectations are sky high for him, but I like that fact that he said he embraced the challenge and liked having come to a place that had lofty goals for its program. If things go well, in eight years we may just have a 40 year old coach that is both young and experienced and we will be on some kind of great run. Heres to supporting the Coach Kiffin and hoping for the best!

There is no winning formula in choosing a new coach. As CLK stated in his press conference he feels blessed to have so much experience at a young age.

the "meat market" book has been mentioned here. it is a good read and illustrates why youth can be such an advantage in the coaching game.

Is that the book written by Coach O?

no, it was written by bruce feldman and is about ed the ogre.

the book ed authored has no words and you have to be really careful to stay inside the lines with your crayolas.

I like the hire...still liked Turner Gill...but whatever.

The "experience" thing has been mentioned alot. Name 1 coach that has SEC ties, UT ties, Southern recruiting ties, that would have even THOUGHT of coming to UT???

????name 1?

Davis...no chance of leaving UNC
Gruden..no way leaving the NFL/$5 mill
Cowher...same as above, and no SEC/southern ties
Lovie Smith....same as above...minus UT ties
Petterson...no southern/sec ties
Kelley....no southern/sec ties
Edsill.....no way
Gill....I like him.....but same thing

Kiffin was the one coach that UT could get, that made the most sense. Nice hire! Lets hope it works!!!!

If CLK gets the assistants that have been mentioned, all they will have to is produce to go down in history as the greatest collection of coaches ever assembled at the college level. As the success begins to show I expect other schools to follow suit and before 8 to 10 yrs you will see programs with coaching staffs as good or better then the NFL.
