Week one polls come out today. Rather than moving up 3-4 spots after a win on Saturday we'll still be 24th or 25th after a win today. Unless we go undefeated, 3-4 spots could make a big deference at the end of the year. SIAD.

You sure they're not holding the polls until tomorrow? It's what they did last year, held off until the last game was played.

EDIT: Just checked. Last year, it was #4 FSU vs. #11 Ole Miss on Monday night. And polls didn't come out until Tuesday.

Think they'll do the same this year.

Correct.

I know the polls don't matter this early, but I enjoy them.

If we win comfortably, I think we move up to 21 with Fl. Dropping to 22 or 23.

Well that's a house of a different color, but I haven't heard that was gonna happen. That makes me feel a lot better. I guess we'll find out later today

Same, Behr. I just enjoy seeing the movement of teams based on performances. Especially knowing the voters are like a school of fish, each making their own decisions but somehow staying largely in a kind of formation. It's just fascinating stuff.

Plus, of course, love seeing our Vols get nationwide respect when they do well.

Yeah, man, I think we're okay. Now watch, they'll prove us all wrong and publish first thing this morning, the bastiges. :)

Yea, it's part of my enjoyment of football season. Sunday mornings with coffee, scores, my pick sheet and the poll from the previous week. I'll do a Top 25 of who I think it should be, and one with what I think it will actually be.

My pick sheet is a possible 3 points per game, winner, winner with points and over/under. I add 1/2 on spread and o/u just so there are no ties. I'm at 68.96% this morning.

I think if we win comfortably, we might crack the top 20. But for right now I could care less. All I know is the game is tonight and I'm beyond excited (and a nervous wreck)! Here's hoping our boys make us proud tonight!

Ranked teams that lost, and how far they might drop:
-- #3 FSU ... will drop a few spots, more for loss of QB (future less bright without him) than loss to Bama
-- #17 Florida ... will drop completely out of the polls
-- #22 West Virginia ... will drop a spot or two
-- #23 Texas ... will drop out of the polls

Ranked teams who won but performed weakly enough to lose spots:
-- #2 Ohio State ... should drop a few spots, but may not (MidWest Mafia)
-- #4 USC ... should drop 5-10 spots
-- #8 Washington ... should drop 5 or more spots
-- #16 Louisville ... should drop a few spots

Put all that together, and it leaves enough movement above the Vols that, as long as we win, should shift us up to around #21 or #22. Might leap over Florida, Texas, West Virginia, and perhaps Louisville.

But first things first: let's win. Go Vols!

Every poll matters at least a little bit. Later polls matter more, but...

It is easier to climb within the poll than it is to climb into it. Unranked tends to mean "forgotten." Win and keep winning and nothing else will matter.

GO BIG ORANGE!

I agree with this. If we take care of business and look good doing it they will move us up next week several spots for the Florida game. This years Florida game is going to be bigger then most people. Both teams 100% have to have this game. Florida vs Tennessee sets up the entire year. Whoever does not come out of that game this year is done.

Let's remember that some very highly ranked teams had a lot of trouble this week and there is a lot of room at the top right now.

The goal is to win the east and get to Atlanta.. So in that sense, this game pretty much is meaningless. I definitely want the win but if we lose, the season isnt over by a long shot. Get through the game injury-free. Thats what I care about the most. Win or lose, our goals are still right in front of us.

I get that and you're right, mathematically. But I'm not convinced it wouldn't be mentally damaging for us going forward. I know VN might not survive it.

Let's just hope we blow them outta the water and never look back:rock:

Losses happen. If this staff allows losing a non conference season opener to "mentally damage" our team, they should be fired on the spot. Win or lose, I think this game tells us very little about this team.

Polls? Like for ranked teams? Nah. We should concern ourselves wth totals.....like injuries and wins. Hoping for 7 and a trip to Nashville.

You're ready to fire them because I'm not sure how the team would handle the loss? So when should they be fired?

Yea, fugit, I didn't want to discuss it either. Fahr somebody.

Wish I could decide how much emphasis to put on this game.
On one hand, there are competitive team and looking good against them would make me feel a lot better.
Otoh, it doesn't tell us much about how we will look against completely different offenses and running are normal tempo. Blowout or close win, gives very little info.

I will be filled with negativity over a loss, regardless of what it means for the SEC race or how little it matters against that offense.

Florida won't drop out. Pollsters will factor in the neutral site, and the suspension and keep them in the 21-23 range

You're misreading me. I'm not wanting anyone fired. I said if our team is so mentally weak that losing a season opener to a non-conference opponent completely derails the season, then our staff didn't do their jobs. I don't think that's going to happen, which is why I said this game kind of is meaningless in terms of what the goal is for this season.
