LOS ANGELES -- USC defensive coordinator Ed Orgeron has been hospitalized because of an infection, coach Lane Kiffin said Thursday.

Orgeron, who broke his right foot Sept. 9, missed the Trojans' Thursday practice. Kiffin said he was hopeful Orgeron would be out of the hospital by Friday afternoon to travel with the Trojans to the Bay Area, where they play No. 16 Stanford on Saturday. Orgeron was admitted to the hospital Wednesday night.

But when reached by phone later Thursday by ESPN.com's Bruce Feldman, Orgeron said he was out of the hospital and was "fine" and would coach Saturday.

"They're still running some tests, still working on him," Kiffin said after practice. "It seems like it's under control and they're hopeful that he'll be back with us, if not Friday then Saturday."

Orgeron is in his second stint at USC. He was the defensive line coach from 1998 to 2002 under Pete Carroll before leaving to become the head coach at Mississippi. He was with Kiffin at Tennessee last season before coming back to USC with him in January.

Kiffin said he doesn't have any contingency plans for coaching the defense if Orgeron isn't back by Saturday.

"Let's not cross that bridge until we have to," Kiffin said.

They probably hospitalized him because they couldn't understand him when he tried to explain his symptoms.

"OH YO YO YO YOOOOOOOO head hurts".

Funny how he is listed as the Def. Coord. when everyone knows Monte calls the shots. I guess this way they both got more money.
