Exactly, let’s frame it as it actually was. When he had talent, just as when he was here and LSU, he was good. That’s because talent could mask his decencies. However, he couldn’t get more out of his players who had less talent and he couldn’t compensate against better offensive athletes.
I can’t think of any coach that’s good without talent. Look at Saban’s record at Michigan State, probably averaged 4-5 losses a year but not sure. And he lost 6 games his first year at bama

That’s pretty much the story of every coach. Saban wasn’t all that great at Michigan State either. Only a very very few can win with inferior talent & even they can’t do it very long. Chavis was a very good, not great DC. Some of his best defenses were wasted with Fulmer’s worst offenses. The 2005 defense was elite but the offense stunk.
I mean idk what you define elite as. He was one of if not the best DC in the country. Consistently had top defensive units statistically. Yeah the third down lapses at crucial times were aggravating but he was still probably elite at least for a span of time there.

Yeah, tell that to the 2002 Miami Hurricanes that scored what, 26 unanswered points.. on our home field.. for our homecoming. Lol

Good point, though.
One of the worst games I ever attended. That Miami team was a beast though.

This is just dumb. Of course there is a correlation between talent and success.

Cue up some more, Captain Obvious.

Why do you feel the need to display narcissism? Can you not just discuss a point or your point of view?

Maybe if you followed the post(s) this was responding to and its discussion, you wouldn’t have shown your ignorance. Your post was just asinine.

Tell that to 2003 Miami Hurricanes and their 6 points….on their field. :)
They had 300 yds more offense than us, three turnovers, the soldier muffled punt and still beat them, ended their 26 game home win streak, kept them without a td for first time since 1984, and that was a loaded Miami team suffering a hangover from the VA tech beat down the week before

Florida scored 63 and 59. Steve Spurrier once went for a 4th and 7 at the 50 yard line in Knoxville and they scored a TD on a wide open post route. He was a good DC, not great. We've had better
Unfortunately, I remember this all too well.
I had seats on the first row of the upper deck right between the uprights on the end of the stadium where they scored.

What did Ken Donaghue do after being DC of our Sugar Bowl team that whupped Miami? I could look it up, but too lazy. 🤷

He took High School RB’s and made them All American LB’s. Your full of it!!

Elite is a Bill Oliver who built a defense that won a NC with a QB who completed 4 passes in a championship game vs a Heisman QB & traditionally fielded a dominant defense.

Chavis was very good. Nothing wrong with that. You’re entitled to your opinion.

I had pretty good seats and as I looked at both teams in warmups I knew we were toast. One team looked like NFL players and the other team looked fat and slow. Miami shut it down in the second half, they could have hung 60 on us.

Took receivers and made them All American DB’s. You’re full of it! Al Wilson was already a LB and that was his position of choice in college. I’m sure the same as other LB’s.

“Third and Chavis”, “Chavis’ prevent defense prevents us from winning”, and so on. He was nothing great without talent. If so, explain that ‘03 Auburn game for example. You know, the first two series that game.

I am not aware of anyone.. However, Ken Donahue, was a defensive coach before he was hired by Mississippi State and then hire by Alabama where he was later promoted to DC. He finished his coaching career at Tennessee and put together the defense which beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl in 1986

Chavis I’m sure
The days of “the prowler” were fun. At the snap of the ball we consistently re-established the line of scrimmage 2 yds deep in the opponents backfield. I long for the days of watching us not just get occasional push, but dominate that side of the ball.
You know what they say about championships ……..

And retired directly from us? You'e gonna make me look this up, I reckon. 🤷

Edit: Yes, he retired from us after 1988. I had forgotten CKD was from Corryton, and played for the Vols and had coached for us previously. I am glad he ended up a Vol again. Died in 2001 at 76, which seems young, these days. 🥲🧡

Larry Lacewell was very sought after and went to the Dallas Cowboys. And while Ken Donahue retired in 1988, he came to Tennessee from Bama and was a very well respected DC. There weren’t many if any better than Donahue back then.
