I just finished Joe Petro's "Standing Next to History: An Agent's Life Inside the Secret Service." He had left the secret service by this time, but he questioned the sanity of the presidential protection detail for allowing him to fly onto this aircraft carrier. He referred to it as essentially the most at-risk the PPD had allowed a president to be in recent history...

It was stupid from a political stand point but he is a trained pilot.

And as far as mission accomplished I think they meant Saddam ousted. But again, very stupid politically and a soft ball served up to those against him.

Agreed. And perhaps more.

It was political grandstanding at the expense of the country, especially the troops. It'd be like Pearl rapelling from the rafters at TBA onto a podium with a banner reading "SEC Champions - Mission Accomplished" before the postseason began.

I thought it was a sincere move to surprise the troops for that Thanksgiving (or was it Christmas) visit several years ago, but the plane landing was highly irresponsible.

I think that he was aware the he is a trained pilot..it didn't matter to him. He was on PPD with Reagan...on his shoulder for 4 years..and I got the strong impression that he would have never allowed this move. I don't see quite the danger that he did..but he seemed livid that they let him do it in the book - and I didn't get the impression that it was politically driven (on his part).

With that said...it was obviously stupid/dangerous from a political standpoint.

seriously? the guy flew in an armed military plane, with escorts, to an armed to the gills carrier in the midst of a fleet.

Am I missing something or is that just a guy trying to sell more books?

Good point. And it isn't like he was doing crazy stuff like Hillary, going into combat areas and dodging sniper fire.

It was actually a very small sidenote in his book..one of the few derogatory things he said, really. I think that he was just very conservative in what situations he would allow his protectee to be in. He came in shortly after Reagan was shot and really stepped up the security on the detail. He also almost cut a kid in half with an oozie once for pointing a watergun at the motorcade of (I believe) Nelson Rockefeller.

I don't really know why he seemed so amped up about it, but he didn't hodl back any criticism about their move to allow him to fly the jet.

After shifting explanations, the White House eventually said the "Mission Accomplished" phrase referred to the carrier's crew completing its 10-month mission, not the military completing its mission in Iraq. Bush, in October 2003, disavowed any connection with the "Mission Accomplished" message. He said the White House had nothing to do with the banner; a spokesman later said the ship's crew asked for the sign and the White House staff had it made by a private vendor.

If there's one thing the Bush Admin. is good at, it's damage control!
