but the proving part is finished. They have big names because they have proven capable. The others all fit the "hopefully capable" category.

I don't know how you add and subtract, but those two columns are wildly different. The number from the hopefully capable list that makes the proven capable list is not very large.

I add and subtract just like everyone else - with my fingers and toes.

How do you define "proven"? Has Kelly not won at Central Michigan? Has he not won at Cincinnati? Surely that proves something. I know it doesn't prove what Davis has proven. It doesn't prove what Gruden has proven, and it doesn't prove what Saban has proven. But none of those guys are coming. It's probably going to have to be someone like Kelly or Patterson, because there are no realistic big names out there.

you simply jumped on the big names comment. I'm giving my explanation as to why the big names are a better option than the other.

They also have a huge advantage on the recruiting front, IMO.

True on the recruiting front, but a season of winning can almost even the playing field.

I understand about big names being better -- I just don't think there are any out there, and I won't be devastated like some people will be when someone like Kelly is hired.

We will begin a national coaching search immediately. We have a great University, world-class student-athletes, a tremendous fans base and first-class facilities. As a result, we will attract some of the nation's best candidates. We will introduce a new coach to you over the next several weeks. Nov. 3, 2008

Sounds like he knew who he wanted.

I think that it goes without saying that it’s ‘As long as it takes to hire the right person.’ We’re going to operate efficiently and expeditously and try to do it as quickly as we can that makes sense. But the moment we put a date on it, then if we go a day beyond that, people are going to think we aren’t getting our candidate. A lot of times, there are a lot of different moving parts to a coaching search; reasons that it might not happen by this date or that date. We’ll operate quickly, but I can’t tell you for sure how long it will be right now.”
Thursday, Nov. 6, 5:30 p.m.

Sounds like who he wanted got cold feet.

“I think it’s reasonable to expect that sometime early to mid-December,” Hamilton said when asked about his timeline on WNOX’s Hallerin Hilton Hill radio show on Wednesday morning. “But I don’t want to put a date on it because as surely as you put a date on it, then if you don’t have a contract nailed down by that point then people assume you’re not getting your guy.”“I feel very good about over the next few weeks bringing someone to the table that everyone can be excited about.”
November 19, 2008

Sounds like the deals back on the table and about to close. Now just who could 'HE' be????

Has everyone noticed there hasn't been one peep out of Tampa about this?

The longer it goes, the more likely it looks like Gruden and Hammy have been connected for some time. Basilio's mention that Hammy has made insiders sign affidavits only points stronger in this direction.

doesn't point in any direction, but does tell the potentials that he's serious about silence on the issue.

Might hint that some of the recent news is absolute garbage.

maybe I skimmed passed this, but if they are currently interviewing why aren't ANY of those names leaking in any sort of semi-official way? No reports through Chattanooga, Knoxville, or ESPN for that matter, makes me curious.

that is what scares me the most. i dont think Bama would be competitive at all, right now, if they would have hired Brian Kelly or an equivalent. they ponied up what Satan wanted and they have 70,000 at the spring game and the recruits out the yang. Collette was right. they are goin bowlin. if we cant get Chucky or Davis because they are not interested, thats acceptable. if we dont get them because Hamilton feels that 3 million is the most that the job is worth, then Hamilton is not handling business. i am not saying that instant success is mandatory, for our program. i am just worried that we will be stuck in the middle of the SEC pack, for a long time, if we dont stir up some buzz with our HC selection.

I think that Hamilton is in contract talks with our new coach as we speak.
Hamilton said. “I feel very good about over the next few weeks bringing someone to the table that everyone can be excited about.”

And it dont appear that hes paying 4 million.
“There’s only one guy making that kind of money,” Hamilton said, alluding to Alabama’s Nick Saban. “I don’t think you have to pay that kind of money necessarily.”

I wanted Gruden but I guess that was pie in the sky.

I for one never expected us to land a /successful/ nfl coach--that's a pipe dream. I'd rather see us hire Leach than Kelly, but again, trying to hire guys who are having big years is hard unless we can offer LOTs more than what they've got now; you know TT, for example, is going to throw lots more cash at Leach. Same with Davis. You never know what you have until they start playing the games--and getting somebody youngish, tough and hungry will be OK with me.

funny I read an article on Bronco Mendenhall just yesterday where he said We’re trying to win the WAC, not the press conference,” but “We hope that we win the press conference too." Is Hammy guilt of plagiarism or could there be a...ahh probably not

I wonder how the Mountain West Conference feels about BYU winning the WAC?

well we can't consider a guy who does not what conference he's in.

ok really it is my faus pax....it was from an SI article he said conference I made it WAC..

while reviewing an article on organizational managment, Bronco name came up. did an search and the below came up

“We’ve done a pretty good job of protecting the individuals involved in the process right now,” Hamilton said. “That’s a key part of them wanting to remain in the process, is the confidentiality of the process. My agreement with all those guys is that we’ll keep it on the low down.”

I like the sounds of this. I think this means that they are talking to upper-echelon coaches at solid universities with winning programs. Who knows, maybe a Pete Carrol or Bob Stoops isn't that far fetched.

I completely agree with you! Everyone on here is so sure it's this person or that person.

Honestly, I don't think any of us will know until it is announced. This has been kept unbelieveably confidential, and I am SURE there are coaches in the mix that haven't even been mentioned on this forum.

Surprise us, Mr. Hamilton!!!

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME. MAKES ME THINK THAT HE'S LOOKING FOR A GOOD COACH NOT JUST A BIG NAME.
you do realize that the big names got their big names by winning football games or building teams, right?[/quote]

Makes me think he better get it right. Big name or no name. He gets one chance to get it right.

It concerns me we are trying to 'win the SEC, not the press conference.' That leads me to believe a lower-echelon talent. I really wish we could contend with the Sabans and the Meyers, but it's not looking good. . .

If we can win the SEC with the new coach, I could care less what his name is. What does it matter if his name is not as recognizable as Saban or Meyer? You don't really believe Hamilton will bring in someone he thinks is sub-par after he just ran Fulmer out do you?
