I haven't read this whole writeup here but it looks like it hits a lot of the history around them.Man, I miss steamed hoagies. When I lived in Knoxville in the 70's and 80's I loved Time Out Deli---steak in a sack!
My dad passed away 9 years ago when I was 56., Dad was 78. As I was standing with my family and greeting people at the visitation, quite a few mistook me for my Dads brother as I definitely look older than I was. Oh well, I worked hard for all this gray hair and facial lines/wrinkles.I always looked a little older than my age, which is great when you're 18 but sucks when you get older.
For me it was Maltese Falcon (Shelbourne Towers), and the Deli was across the hall.My first Freshman year on the Hill (I was a Freshman for a while) I lived in Clement Hall. Gus’s was the first place I bought beer, about 5 minutes after my parents left after helping me move in.
Gus knew me well enough that if I passed out while there he would let me be until I woke up. 5 years after I left he called me by name when I made it back.
Man I miss those sandwiches.
Only OTHER place...was off campus at "Smokey Mountain MARKET...YEAH!!!"Something I never realized was that the steamed sandwich is basically only a Knoxville/East TN thing.
If I'm close to campus, Gus's it is. Out west, Sam and Andy's. My go to is "hoagie on dark, mustard and mayo." Back in the day, Time Out Deli out in Bearden was a great place to go late night. Only thing, I had a tough choice between my hoagie or a Steak in a Sack, LOL. Sometimes I got both......with an order of fried mushrooms.Man, I miss steamed hoagies. LOL, yea, and if I remember correctly, they were pretty affordable........maybe $2 dollars?Only OTHER place...was off campus at "Smokey Mountain MARKET...YEAH!!!"
"GIVE ME A ROOSTER...AND CHASE HIM THROUGH THE GARDEN!!!!" - Chick fil A just THINKS it "invented the chicken sandwich"...meanwhile...The ROOSTER was KING!!!!
This is really good writing. Makes me miss home.I haven't read this whole writeup here but it looks like it hits a lot of the history around them.

“They Like That Soft Bread” — THE BITTER SOUTHERNER
In Knoxville, Tennessee, folks love sandwiches from a Fresh-O-Matic steamer like they love their grandmas.bittersoutherner.com
Any chance you remember the food truck that used to park outside of Hess Hall? You could get 3 chili dogs with onions and mustard for $1.10 A quick trip down the hill to the convenient store to buy a .69 cent quart of beer and you had a great late night snack to watch Johnny Carson..........Only OTHER place...was off campus at "Smokey Mountain MARKET...YEAH!!!"
