Technically, Gus is competing for a national championship. Difficult path, but if Auburn beats Alabama, and then beats UGA a 2nd time, there's no way it's getting left out of the playoff.
Malzahn is underrated as a coach. Biggest problem is that Auburn plays 2nd fiddle to Alabama inside Alabama, which has made Malzahn's path to getting top classes much more difficult. I do think he'd have more success in Knoxville than Auburn, but he has had 3 subpar seasons out of 5 at Auburn, so I have less confidence about him than I have about someone like Dan Mullen, who has overachieved 7 out of 9 seasons at Miss State, and has been routinely doing well with a huge talent disparity. Feel like Tennessee is a slightly better situation than Auburn right now, but honestly, that probably means no more than a +0.5 to +1.0 game difference.
Though, I also think Malzahn would be a bit foolish to leave Auburn now that Jarrett Stidham is playing well and has 2 years of eligibility left.
I don't think he wants the Arkansas job. Not a lot of talent there. He'd be better off to hold out for a better opportunity.
Talked to a friend who knows a parent of a player on the team. I wont say who the player is but there are unhappy folks there even though they are winning. I am sure it goes on at every school but players feel like they are being lied to. This player was told he was going to get playing time but the coaches made a call to do some injections on the starter and played them in front of someone that was not hurt. Backup voiced concerns about being told he was going to play and he has not seen the field since. Also said that after the Arkansas game Malzahn didn't travel back with the team, may be nothing but he stayed in Arkansas for a bit. I take it as the feeling on the team is that there is a good chance he is gone.
Take it for what its worth but this person wouldn't lie about it and he fully trusted the parent he got the information from.
I think its funny that a recruit can lie all day to coaches about where they are going to school, take visits, and commit, and who theyve talked to. Yet if a coach says he will get a player playing time and doesnt follow through then the player is suddenly outraged.
There is a difference between a mature adult leader making millions not being upfront with those he leads than a 17 year changing his mind on which college he wants to attend.
