Mental illness just doesn't fly anymore when you kill multiple people. The mental illness should've been diagnosed beforehand, or maybe not let a psychopath out on bail.

That’s cute but a bit over dramatic. Being free has nothing to do with how vigilant you are in your surroundings when you aren’t in your home . A deer is free , a bear is free , a bird is free . Being aware and vigilant is something more people absolutely should work on becoming , I guarantee it would save lives. Think of how absurd it is to assume that walking around in a store with 100+ people that you don’t know , is safe because you are free and they are just there to get chips and avocados to make a dip for their book club meeting .

Need to issue something of a clarification: the retired policeman working security did shoot back and the armor the shooter wore deflected the rounds. He seems to have aimed as trained: center mass.

The point still stands that NY law prevented any other victims from fighting back. A less well trained person maybe gets lucky hitting an extremity.
