Gun control debate (merged)

I take a civilian militia interpretation of the Second Amedment, which is basically that the Second Amendment is no longer valid, having been intended to protect a militia system that is no longer in place

Don't interpret it. It reads as it is. The second amendment is always valid.

Tom Dempsey kicked one straight on from 63 yards with his short club foot, but overall distance is less. I was stuck at a little over 45 yards, but that was almost 50 years ago, and I was a teenager, and not that strong. Weight training has come a long way.

45 yards is impressive in any era, especially 50 years ago. You kick in high school/college?

The great news is you can choose to exercise rights, or not. So show your solidarity against the 2A by not owning any guns. There, you've ensured one more gun free home.

Doesn't ensure my family's safety when some gun nut opens fire in a school, park, public place, etc.

Note: I'm not advocating for the complete abolishment of guns, just more strict testing to get them. Is this really too much to ask considering all the mass shootings in the last decade+?

If you'd look at the actual facts, you'd see violent crime is actually down.

Even if true, if some simple legislation can further restrict the epidemic of mass shootings in this country, then why not do it. The US by far has the most gun violence/deaths of any civilized country in the world.

Because all the legislation we already have has worked so well?

Given our leadership's unscrupulous penchant for bait and switch policy making, "yes" that is too much to ask...

I'll rely on the armed forces and law enforcement (although if I was a minority I might be a little wary of this one).

Avg response time of first responders is 10 mins. Enjoy the wait!

If you believe that the United States Constituion is just a "****ing piece of paper", then not sure this debate is worth having.

Oh, then I'm your Huckleberry since DTH and I disagree on things along this line...

Now where to start?

Self-defense.
Negligence.
4th amendment contains a reasonableness standard. I assume you will recognize this since you believe so strongly that the 2nd amendment gives you the right to own as many guns as you want.

I could keep going, but don't want to bore anyone.

Please bore me. I was a cop and I know all about the 4th Amendment. And your reasonableness standard you are trying to apply to the 2nd Amendment doesn't really work. It's an apples to squirrels comparison. But go ahead and try to make the comparison.

Same arrogance that leads people to think the 2nd amendment gives them the right to own an unlimited amount of guns/weapons.

Is there a portion of the 2nd Amendment that says the Right is restricted? I remember reading "shall not be infringed." Nothing about how much one could own.

Then you failed basic reading comprehension. Hell, 2nd Grade English.

Ever hear of a comma? And how it separates portions of a sentence from each other? And how specifically the militia portion happens to be separated from the right to bear arms portion?

If you strictly interpret it, then militia argument is strong IMO.

Actually if you strictly interpret it, the militia argument gets really weak.

Define militia for me please.

Can you provide stats on said gun nuts and how often they open fire on schools, parks, public places, etc? Or are you going to find out how most of those shootings were undertaken with illegal firearms?

I'll hang up and listen.

I think most sane people are skeptical of the notion that some office worker with an hour long concealed weapon permit class under his belt and a Glock is going to get into an effective firefight with terrorists armed with assault rifles.

Much more likely that his gun is stolen and used in a crime down the road.

I'll take the chance to defend myself. Please feel free to approach the shooter and ask to be shot first since you're not terribly interested in self preservation.

Hmmm, I wonder why "gun nuts" don't open fire at a gun shop, better yet, a gun show? Oh that's right, it's the risk of incoming projectiles from your intended victims.

I would like to go back to the original system where every adult male was required to own fire arms and respond to defend the village. I'm a feminist so I'd expand that to all adult citizens.
