Guitars.. What you got?

Beginner acoustic guitar for a boy who wants to take it to college. He is a strong piano player, with 12+ years of an hour a day, so he understands music theory and will pick it up quickly.

Budget is under $400.

Think I am narrowed down to an Eastman PCH-2om or a Yamaha fs830 (tobacco)

Any thoughts from you all?

Can’t go wrong with either but I’d say go for the Yammy. It’s a workhorse that can be lugged around and take beating. Get it set up by a professional though. A must.

I've been impressed with the Eastmans I've played. My son actually started with a small Eastman acoustic that he still has and now has a full sized Eastman dreadnought. Neck shape and action has been really good from new and build quality is really nice for the price. I don't have any experience with newer Yamaha guitars but I've heard they're solid.

Thanks all. Shopped around a bit at a few stores. Played an fg800 that was his favorite. Couldn’t find an 830 to play, but everything online says they are comparable to, if not better than the 800.

I found a “mint” (we will see) FG830 tobacco burst on sale from a store in Tx that ships free. All in under $320.

Leaves a few bucks for setup/case as needed.

Played some Eastmans, and really liked them, but the boy liked the Yamaha more, and it was considerably cheaper.

I have an Eastman E10D that has a beautiful old growth Adirondack spruce top. Eastman sources great spruce and build incredible guitars for the price.

My son has really gone all-in on playing guitar and even plays in a band now at just 14. It's his only real hobby...never could get him into playing any sports. He's really surprised me with how good he's getting. He also is an all A student and makes it really easy to want to spoil him. He's decided that he would like a Telecaster, so I decided to go a bit overboard for his Christmas gift and got him a Lucky Dog Evangelist. I've got to hide it for a few more weeks...but that means I get to play it for a few more weeks. I think his eyes are going to pop out of his head when he sees it.

Beautiful guitars. You really can’t beat them. I remember a guy playing one just like this in a large church auditorium, plugged in. Evidentky, nobody told the guitar that it wasn’t a $2K Martin. It sounded beautiful.

Higher end acoustics really only shine on their own. A good setup, quality strings, and the right electronics/processing can make an entry level A/E sound like almost anything you want. Even my budget home software (Reason) run through Mackie studio monitors can create an incredible spectrum of tones.

Obviously, the biggest factor is the skill of the human playing it, not the instrument. Neck and fret adjustments, etc would be next for me.

Well, it arrived from the Tone Shop in Addison, Tx. Beautiful guitar. Even came setup. Even I, a horrible player, strummed a few clean, crisp chords and hit a few licks before she went back to Santa’s workshop.

Mint was, well, mint. Looked brand new.

Couldn’t be more excited to give this to my boy on Christmas Day!

Facts.

Spend 20 minutes knocking her down to open C, and hold onto your butt for the ride.

What case is that? I'm in love.
I'll give that a try this weekend. It took long enough to get to dropped C# after shipping.

And thanks! It's a deluxe Taylor hard case that comes standard with all of their higher- end models.

Black Mountain Side by Zeppelin will scratch the itch.

I also recommend River by Joni Mitchell (pretty much all of her stuff is in the open C family).
