Alderman candidate Gaines charged with DUI after being found asleep - Nashville, Tennessee - Wednesday, 08/01/07 - Tennessean.com

Gaines, 48, was found by police Tuesday at 4 a.m. asleep in the grass outside his Grand Jeep Cherokee along the 1100 block of Downs Boulevard, according to a police report.

“People will not understand. It was pain medication,” Gaines said. “I wasn’t even driving the car at the time.”

Gaines’ football career began at DuPont High School in Old Hickory. Next he went to the University of Tennessee, where he was selected to the All-Academic Team in 1978. During the 1980s, he was a five-year starter for the Seattle Seahawks and completed his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1989.

Well, I can understand the pain meds making you a little tired. Happens to me too!

He was friends with my student teacher that I had in third grade.....He came to my elementary school & we all got to meet him. Then a few months later, I was down at Tom Black track for a meet & saw him. Of course, I ran up to him (being ten and unafraid of anything!). He was so nice and said he remembered coming to my class & meeting us all. Always a fan after that.

I graduated from Dupont w/ all the Gaines. They were all athletes. One of them was the player for Vanderbilt that hit the Ole Miss player which paralyzed him. Greg was some kind of player....hate that this happened to him...

Seriously - from a legal perspective - how do you get a DUI for being asleep in the grass next to your car? I don't understand.

On the bright side, he didn't try to keep driving. He stopped and got out of the driver's seat (if he was driving, I guess he says he wasn't). I hope that's taken into consideration in court.

the police can charge you with whatever they want to....now, the question is can they make it stick
