Greg Adkins was let go at OSU today. Doesn't look like a recruiter anymore but he can coach and has a proven track record. Thoughts VN?

Both is the answer not one or the other.

What we have in Butch is a better recruiter than coach. I am a big supporter, but that pitch starts to wear thin on the trail if the new recruits don't see a payoff after you have "your guys" in place.

That being said what is the right mix of recruiter\coach?

If you want to win, a coach can make that happen and I believe Adkins can coach with the best of them. Leave the recruiting up to someone else and let him coach.

I think it is funny how every time someone gets FIRED from another program, there is a segment that wants that person immediately as our coach.

Why is that funny especially in regards to an Oline coach that has underachieved from a coaching standpoint for the last 3 years at UT? Considering that most everyone (including myself) would like to see that change on the staff.

Why do some bash the buddy system yet yearn for the days of the Skoal patrol?

Adkins was Mahoney before Mahoney was Mahoney. Produced consistently underwhelming O lines in his time here.

He had more than a small hand in helping get Fulmer fired.

Plus, if he wasn't good enough the first time here, or UGA, and now OK St, why should he be good enough for the Vols now??

No thanks.

The guys from VQ are still suggesting that Mahoney will be out and Stripling will take a different role (non coaching).
And that most likely it will be Walt Wells and Brady Hoke filling the roles.

:good!: I'd prefer a guy on the way up who has something to prove. A lot of these guys are thinking about retirement, not winning titles!

And who do you have in mind?? If we hire a young guy, he has no experience and has to learn on the job. Always have to complain about something.

Let go for a reason. Reasons that go deeper than headlines. This post is more than 140 characters. Football is deeper than what looks good on paper.
